“It’s time to quit living and dwelling in the past with hatred and prejudices and move forward into the future.”  — William R. Sutton

I read Mike McLellan’s Ethics & Values column, “Racism still in our world” (Tracy Press, April 2), and I agree with him that the world has changed. I was born in 1936 and grew up in Oakland in a white neighborhood, with a black playmate as a friend. I didn’t think anything about it; however, many white adults noticed the racial differences. As a child, I never understood why.

I saw racism in 1957 when I joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Maine. My barracks had four men in a room; two sections were for whites, and two were for blacks. When an airman in my room moved out, a black friend named Joe in our squadron moved in. We had a lot in common, as he had lived in Richmond. Joe and I hung out together at the restaurants, theater and taverns in town. I took a lot of flak and name-calling behind my back for associating with Joe. There was a lot of prejudice, not only in the town but also on the base.

There is plenty of racism to go around, even today, not only against blacks, but also against whites, Japanese, Jews, Vietnamese and Mexicans. Sometimes people make racist remarks to me, not knowing I’m married to a Mexican. I’m white, and I’ve been married to a Mexican woman for the past 34 years, and we have seen our share of prejudice. We still see it when we register at a motel or eat together at a restaurant.

Racism is alive and well all over the world. I feel like the civil rights of blacks have been set back two decades since the Rev. Jeremiah Wright preached his hateful remarks about “goddamn Americans” and said the white man is responsible for the way blacks are treated today. The Rev. Wright is wrong and is a racist, pure and simple.

This country is not the “KKK, USA,” and spouting irresponsible racist comments won’t bring white and black men together. It sure doesn’t help Sen. Barack Obama’s run for president, either.

When is the hate between different Americans going to end? We are supposed to be the United States. There are people in this country who hate America and want to see it destroyed. They hate the government and the American flag and everything that it stands for.

It’s a shame that people can’t learn to live together in harmony in a free society. It’s time to quit living and dwelling in the past with hatred and prejudices and move forward into the future. This is a positive change that all Americans can live with.

• William R. Sutton, 72, has lived in Tracy for 30 years and is retired. He is the author of “The Wind Blew Him West,” about his grandfather who traveled West by covered wagon on the Oregon Trail in 1862.

I saw alot of Racism in the Millitary also, Blacks could play the race card at will, anytime they wanted 'special considerations, or to exact "revenge' they cried discrimination, every time it was a Lie. I saw blacks cut into lines and when anyone would complain, they were met with Filty cussing, and threats of Violence, and I also saw a black cut in line and when a White Guy complained, he was struck in the head with a Large Glass coke bottle and was knocked unconcious. Nothing was done about it, because the group of blacks Lied and they all got off free.
I also saw blacks "borrow" Belts , hats, shoes for Uniform inspections, and the lenders had to ask repeatedly for the return of the items, and were treated as if They didnt even have a right to do so.
Dont give me that Crap that Blacks are suffering Racism alone
They have learned to practice it with relish.
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are the Patron Saints of Race baiting...We cant move forward because Blacks dont want to.

Yes, you know what? I am tired of people saying my best friends or neighbors or my cousins wife or husband is black. Who really gives a rats behind. There is and always will be racisum in the minds of the racially minded people. And for those who are not racially minded can't help but roll their eyeballs back when Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton call for the firing of Don Imus and they all say racist things themselves. It hurts everybody when old JJ and AS get on their mule and bang the race card drum. Man if WE WHITES DID IT we would be called the KKK of the USA and possibly jailed for a hate crime. Equality I think not. Hold everybody accountable no matter what the race or gender. Then people will have at least SOMETHING of substance to belly ache about.

Yes and who says racism just limited to a White people, or black people, or brown people?

And have you ever heard of "reverse racism"???

I'm tired of being called white. I wan't to be called "sky colored skin" or something anything else that sounds like it will get more respect out here on the street, wit' da homeys.

I have an idea lets create TRAQC and give the illusion that we care about minorities. We can keep pretending until after the election. At that point we will run out of permits for the minorities. When you can't get anything; work, TJ's, BayAreaJobs... don't blame us for shoving Measure A down Tracy's throat...

First, I want to mention that I completely agree with Mr.Sutton's message that was exposing the harm of "racism" in America and that as "Americans", we should get together and move forward than backwards. In order to do this we as "Americans" should be looking at each other as "we" rather than framing arguments as
"us" against "them" if we want to create change in our society. As long as we sustain this view about ourselves as "us" and "them" as Americans we are not working to create a positive change in our scoiety. Furthermore, we should set positive examples and send positive messages as Mr.Sutton did
to others if we want a "positive" change in our society.
To Mr.Reshakis and Mr.Postal, if indeed you are tired and frustrated with racism in America and people who exemplify racist or ethnocentric views then you should discuss what kind of positive solutions or actions we should take as a society to improve "America". Merely pointing out other people's prejudiced actions and views only present your view and frustration with "America" and by doing so it defeated the purpose of Mr. Suttons positive message. I think that is quite different from the direction that Mr.Sutton intended in his message which was to move to a united and better future of "America". Why can't we as "Americans" discuss as a nation about how we can build bridges betweeen communties through social interaction and education and acceptance as a solution to create a better "America". Why don't we ignore the "racist" media figures and racist behaviors of others and educate ourselves by reading books by or learning about "true" American Patriots who brought about "positive" change to America. Why are we not having discussions about what kind of behaviors that would bring about positive change amongst us? Why are we not discussing about how did Americans who brought positive change to American bring about a better America?

Racism is alive and well in the U.S. and that's why we, as a people, will never be a "united" states. We have no common bond holding us together. We're a mish-mash of different cultures. I think this could all change if we started thinking of ourselves as an American first and your ancestoral heritage second. There is no sense in saying one race is better than the other in this country. We all bleed the same color and wipe our butts with either the left or right hand.
