Bill would hide cops’ pay Print E-mail
Written by Kim Chapman / For the Tracy Press /

A letter writer argues against withholding any public information.

EDITOR,

Assembly Bill 1855, authored by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge, is the type of bill that should never be allowed to pass. The state Supreme Court had it right when they ruled against the withholding of public information in order to hide police identities and badge numbers as well as salary and benefits. These people are public servants who are supposed to serve and protect, but they want to hide behind this bill.

I don't think they want to hide behind this bill at all. It's the introduction of bills like 1855 that will eventually make other information available to the public, like home addresses and phone numbers. You can take it for what it's worth but the first 3 letters of that bill tell you where it's coming from...............Ass 1855

I doubt a democratic (liberal) politician speaks for police officers. The one's I know are glad their crappy pay is publicized.

I don't see the problem with general information given out but to list employees by name and exact annual income. Why don't they hand out information like that for everyone that works for the IRS so anyone can find them. Expecially on a day like today. Maybe all DEA and FBI agents should be listed with their personal information as well. Why be concered that their family is safe? Give information on a curve, highest and lowest in a catergory. Why do all employees between need to be named?

You've got the crappy pay down ok. Police officers make way too little compared to other jobs. If anyone is interested in what police officers make all they have to do is pick up a brochure at the police department. I don't believe it would be correct to post an officers name next to what he made during any period. Pro-sports athletes probably don't like that their salaries are posted but I wouldn't care if my name was listed with a salary of $25m per year.

I'm trying to understand your logic. Someone dedicates their life to saving peoples lives and in the process, risking theirs. And you think their salary and personal info should be public because???????

I can see publishing the total payroll and number of officers that are employed, but to specifically name what each person made is unnecessary. Would you want your W2 posted up at your job???!!!!!

Public servant or not, that does not make it right to publish a persons salary. IMO.
