In one doubles match, the West team needed an extra game in each set to take the win. And West sophomore Parker Lewis came back from his 0-6 loss in the first set to win his second match against Mike Bottke, 7-6, and then took a tie-breaker set, 6-2, at the end of the afternoon.
“To turn it around, I just tried to hustle more,” Lewis said afterward. “Get to every single shot and get it back in.”
West’s players said that was the way to beat the only other undefeated team in the Tri-City Athletic League. West is now 6-0 in TCAL play and 7-2 overall.
Brett Spadoni, the team’s lead player, said Josh Morales from St. Mary’s was his toughest opponent so far this year. Spadoni won his match 6-4, 6-1. “My main thing was to stay as consistent as possible,” Spadoni said. “I’m just trying to stay in the game until he misses a shot."
In the other singles match, West’s Kevin Canoy beat Mike Soleri, 6-3, 6-4.
Daniel de la Cruz said he and his doubles partner, Serggio Antonio, felt like they were accustomed to the strong wind across the West High fields Tuesday, but they also had opportunities to score if they were persistent and patient enough to wait for opportunities to power the ball past opponents Tanner Kriscovich and Brad Johnston of St. Mary’s.
“The thing that won most of our points were smashes,” he said. “They had given us a couple good rallies. Everyone else, we give them the one-two punch, but these guys gave us a battle.”
Antonio and de la Cruz won their match, 6-0, 6-3. West’s other doubles team, Luke Creasman and Jerome Oribello, beat St. Mary’s Evan Gikas and Anthony Buscaglia, 7-5, 7-5.
West also beat McNair High, 4-1, on Thursday. West swept the singles matches as de la Cruz beat My Yann, 6-3, 6-3; Antonio beat Sam Wolfe, 6-2, 6-0; and Baljit Singh beat Tony Nguyen, 6-0, 6-1.
In the doubles, Luke Creasman and Jerome Oribello beat Daniel Hobbs and Ivan Guzman, 6-3, 6-3, and West forfeited the other doubles match because one of West’s players was ineligible.
