Worth a $300 fine? Print E-mail

A letter writer tries to convince other drivers to stay out of handicap-designated spaces.

EDITOR,

This letter is to address the issue of parking in handicap parking spots in Tracy. If you park in those spots without the proper license plates or placard in the front window, you should know that anyone who sees this violation can call the police — and the police can give you a ticket.

The ticket will cost you more than $300 for parking in a handicap spot without an ID from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

I have heard all the excuses about why you have to park in a handicap space. But please, if you’re not handicapped, leave these spots open for those of us who really need them.

Call the police. They will come in about 4 hours, when the person is goon. Thats a fact. It has little priority with the so called police dept. What a joke. I would love to see a comment from our locial law inforcement jokers.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You try taking a job where every time you pull someone over or go to their house you don't know if they're going to pull a gun and kill you.

Police priorities are:
#1 - Threats to life
#2 - Threats to property
#3 - Everything else

Illegal parking is a problem, but not so much that they should drop everything and come sirens blazing to catch some nitwit that's too lazy to walk 50 feet.

Leave the cops alone.

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. If you can walk and move freely in life, be glad and stay out of handicapped spots!

My cousin has cerebral palsy and can not walk. My Uncle said many times handicapped spots are taken up by non-handicapped people and that makes it so much more difficult for them to get him in and out of his wheelchair.

It is so sad that people are so thoughtless and inconsiderate.

The police will come and ticket people in handicapped spots so call them and report it!

Park behind the offending driver so that they can't get out and go about your business.

Amazing to see the lack of compassion among thoughtless able bodied drivers. Shame.

A retired police officer friend of mine once told me about this very funny exchange that occurred one night while enforcing handicap parking at a supermarket. He parked in a dark corner, turned off the lights on his patrol car and waited for the first idiot of the night. He saw a late-model car pull into a handicap spot, saw the driver exit the vehicle and walk into the store. He turned on his headlights, parked behind the offending vehicle, ran a check on the license plate and shone his flashlight inside to see if she might have forgotten to put a handicap placard up, as some people do on occasion. She exited several minutes later to see him finishing the citation.

She said, rather excitedly, "...but Officer, I was just getting some potatoes," while holding up her purchase of Idaho's finest.
"Wow. How much did you pay for those?"
"Seven dollars."
And with that, he tore off the citation, handed it to her and said, "You just bought yourself a $250 (the fine at the time) sack of potatoes."

Smart people let stupid people make mistakes and learn from them. So I don't feel sorry for anyone like that at all.

Also remember that there are actually 3 violations that come to mind re: handicap parking spaces. 1. Parking without handicap card/license plate. 2. Blocking handicap parking. 3. Parking on the diagonal lines. The police can cite for whichever is appropriate. All they will have to do is change the sub-section, A-B-or C, and the best news of all...the fine is the same for all violations. Neat, huh? Also, the driver MUST carry identification from DMV on their person in addition to the handicap placard. If the driver is using the placard illegally, assigned to someone else, there is another section for that too PLUS the placard can be taken by the police officer and sent to DMV where the issued person must pay a "fine" to have the placard returned to them.
