House Dems = higher gas Print E-mail
Written by Robert Blanch / For the Tracy Press /

Democrats who assigned blame two years ago should be held responsible for soaring prices now, a letter writer says.

EDITOR,

In the 2006 congressional campaign, Jerry McNerney and his campaign attacked former Congressman Richard Pombo with misleading advertisements and signs that said, “Pombo + Cheney = HIGH GAS.” At the time, gas was about $2.18 per gallon.

In less than two years, gas has nearly doubled, thanks to supply and demand, to $3.70. We must import 65 percent of our gasoline, while the Democrats and McNerney have voted to raise taxes on gas.

If McNerney and the Democrats can blame the former Republican Congress for high gas prices, then the Democrat-controlled Congress should take full responsibility for the price nearly doubling under its watch.

I'm sorry, but I think the cost of oil doubling and hovering around $100 a barrel has a bit more to do with the cost of gas than anything either congress person has done.

Oils going up for 3 primary reasons.

1. Supply has outstripped demand primarily because China and India are buying it up. Even more drilling won't compensate for the dramatically increased demand.

2. When the dollar devalues relative to other currencies imports like oil get more expensive. It also makes it relatively cheaper for other country's like China and India to out bid us for resources like oil.

3. Instability in oil producing regions. There's a premium being paid now for oil because of the uncertainty in the market.

Certainly Democrats have been in favor of alternatives to oil more so than Republicans, but if Republicans cared about "the people" more than oil company's, then maybe they should not be antagonizing oil producing countries and should have exercised more fiscal discipline when they had power.

I believe that the only practical way for us to relieve or dependence foreign oil is to invest in research for alternatives. Continuing to subsidize oil companies does not lead to that end.

There also seems to be confusion. McNerny is a federal office holder, and does not have any say with regard to state gas taxes.

Steve
How Garamendi has anything to do with this topic is beyond me. Not every topic lends itself as an opportunity for you to bash her. Your certainly entitled to your opinion, but why not save it for articles that are relevant.

The Dums or it Dems have no energy plan except to raise taxes. We should be energy independent. That will lower gas prices. We have the resources here in our country. Raising taxes is not a solution but a feel good to Dems. Why is it their answer to everything is taxes?

Jim Lamb, OK, point made. Oil for now is here to stay as we have no new alternative to replace it. Why in the world we are not persuing it(drilling), is killing us. If we stay on this track, we will be longing for the days of $3 a gallon gas. Not to mention the poor saps back east who have to use home heating oil. McNerney and his campaign did use a lot of misleading to unseat Pombo.
