The Tracy High soccer team continues its roll through league with a win over Chavez.

Tracy High’s girls soccer teams claimed two more wins Tuesday at Plasencia Field against the Chavez Titans in the teams’ second matchup in San Joaquin Athletic Association play.

The first time out, in early March, the local varsity team dominated a 10-0 game. This time, the Bulldogs — now 6-1 in the SJAA, 6-2-2 overall — won 5-0 against Chavez.

The ’Dogs rarely gave the Titans a chance to even get close to the Tracy goal and forced the Titans to play a defensive game throughout.

“We missed a lot of shots,” said Alexis Poppoff, who scored once unassisted in the first half and again in the 56th minute with an assist from Breahna Berry.

Berry also scored two goals assisted by Katelyn Golik in the second half, and Andrea Uchiyama put one in unassisted.

Poppoff, a freshman, said that even against an outmatched team, she and her teammates had to focus on how they moved the ball through the Chavez defense and outmaneuvered defenders.

“After one got beat, the other would do a good job of filling in for them,” she said, adding that the Bulldogs will have to pass the ball better if they are to beat the better SJAA teams. One of those is Lincoln, which handed Tracy its only defeat last week. The other is Lodi, which Tracy plays Friday on the road.

The sophomores also went into Tuesday’s match knowing they would outplay the Chavez team, and they kept Chavez on defense for nearly the entire game. The win puts Tracy at 7-0 in the SJAA and 11-0-1 overall.

Taryn Jones, who scored a goal and had an assist, said it was a chance for players who don’t normally get the ball or score to show what they could do.

“We gelled pretty well together and worked on our passing and overlaps,” she said. “We still had to play our best. Every game we have to push our team further.”

Marissa Matta scored two goals for Tracy and had an assist. Danielle Stepanoff and Liesel Bogetti also scored. Ashley Arteaga had two assists, and Melissa Aboud had one.
