The West High girls softball team claimed its first win in Tri-City Athletic League play Tuesday against Stagg High in a 10-0 home game called at the end of five innings on the mercy rule.

West pitcher Jacey Brown allowed no hits in four innings, and reliever Brittaney Enterline pitched one more hitless frame.

Brown said she was a little nervous, considering that she usually doesn’t start and that, in this case, her pitching would determine how the Wolf Pack would start their league season.

"I just try to have confidence and keep the ball down," she said. "The last inning, I felt really good."

Coach Steve Anastasio said he expects the tough TCAL matches will come later in the season against St. Mary’s and Tokay, but the first league win was important after the Pack went 8-9 in the preseason.

"It’s a nice way to start the league season after we struggled through some games," he said.

West got its big hits from Arianna Welch and Caitlyn Girard. Welch went 3-for-4, including a double and two RBIs, and Girard went 3-for-3, including an RBI and a double into deep left-center that she tried to stretch into a triple. But she was tagged out at third.

"We set high expectations for ourselves," Girard said, adding that even in a lopsided win, the team needed to be aggressive.

"It was just a matter of us coming out on the field and showing that," she said.

West coach Martin Miller took the opportunity to start some of the players who didn’t see much preseason play, and they didn’t disappoint him. The Pack started with eight runs in the first inning and eight more in the second, with 16 hits in all.

Megan Anastasio went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Madison Hargraves was 2-for-3 with a double, Danielle Edwards was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Tracy Wents was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Brookside 10, Millennium 4

Brookside started with four runs in the first and three in the second in the Harvest Christian League opener at the Tracy Sports Complex on Tuesday. Millennium responded with a home run in the second, but scored only once more after that.

Millennium coach Ray Eakin said his batters had a tough time against the Brookside pitcher, who tossed 15 strikeouts in seven innings. The loss puts the Falcons at 4-2 overall.
