A crash waylays Tracy racer Ryan Philpott in his first race of the season.

Tracy driver Ryan Philpott ended up in 23rd place out of 25 cars in Roseville on Saturday after a crash in the 72nd lap disabled his car.

Eric Holmes of Escalon won the opening race of the NASCAR Camping World Series West and the $7,550 first-place cash prize. He won the race in 2006 and was one of the veteran racers favored going into Saturday’s race. He was followed by David Mayhew of Atascadero and last year’s winner Mike David of Modesto.

Philpott had the 15th starting position after the qualifying heat but hoped to have better position at the start of Saturday’s event. He lost his right front fender early in the race in a collision with another car, and in the 72nd lap, his car spun out as he tried to avoid a crash in front of him.

Philpott said another car crashed into him before he could get back on the track, and that ended the race for him.

He plans to enter the next Camping World race in Phoenix on April 10, but whether he has his car ready in time will depend on if he can get sponsorships.
