A mother pens a plea for a solution to a neighborhood play space taken over by "riffraff."
I wanted to comment on your story regarding the vandalism at Slayter Park (March 29, “Park neighbors decry vandalism, drugs”).
I live on Blair Avenue, and I have a perfect view of what goes on in the park. I’ve seen it all. I’ve called the police department on many occasions, and it’s hit-and-miss. Sometimes the police get there when kids are still there, but most often, by the time police get there, the riffraff is gone. I have lived in the neighborhood for six years, and my 9-year-old son has never been allowed to play in that park.
We returned home one afternoon, and as we drove in, my son noticed graffiti all over the huge planters and overhangs in the park. We called the graffiti hotline but got no response. So with the help of a neighbor and her two grandsons, we bought paint and painted over the graffiti ourselves.
Something needs to be done. This park is not supposed to be a pot-smoking, drug-dealing haven for people to hang out in. This is a neighborhood, with children and families.
