Quick hits

• April Fools': Sen. Hillary Clinton walked somberly into a press conference Tuesday and stood before microphones. Reporters tensed, expecting her to say she was dropping out of the race. “We clearly need to do something so that our party and our people can make the right decision,” she said. And then she proposed a bowl-off with Sen. Barack Obama. Winner take all.

• Save the planet: Al Gore believes the road to solving the climate crisis winds through pop culture, beginning tonight with a 30-second ad on “American Idol,” where his public advocacy campaign premiers.

• Ignore the economists: Seventy-two percent of adults think the state is in a recession, and 76 percent expect the nation to face tough financial times in the coming year, according to a poll by the Public Policy Institute of California.
