In an extra game, the Tracy High softball team took on the defending Central Section champs, and gave them all they could handle. The Tracy varsity girls added a game on top of their NorCal Classic tournament schdeule and faced the Clovis Cougars on Thursday at West High. Clovis won 1-0 as senior pitcher Rebecca Arbino pitched a seven-inning no-hitter, but Tracy coach Greg Smith said his team put up a respectable effort as the Bulldogs kept last year’s Central Section champions scoreless through six innings. "It showed that we can play against any team and have a chance to win," he said, explaining that Clovis came to the tournament in Tracy with the expectation that the Cougars would play an extra game, and Smith said his team would be up for the challenge. Arbino threw 13 strikeouts and allowed only two runners to reach base, one on a walk and another hit by a pitch. Morgan Hayes pitched seven innings for Tracy, struck out eight and faced no more than four batters in any inning. The score was tied going into the seventh inning, when Clovis collected two base hits. Another got on base through a fielder’s choice and ended the game when she scored two batters later on an infield error. Tracy freshmen win tourney The Tracy High freshman girls swept four games in the Antioch Freshman Tournament this week and claimed the tournament championship in the final game Thursday. The tournament results put the team at 13-0-1 for the season. Coach Keith Britt said the girls met up with some good competition, including a couple of East Bay teams, California High of San Ramon and Freedom High of Oakley, which had previously been undefeated. All-Tournament honors went to Tracy’s Taylor Martinez, Briana Aldridge and Sara Pombo. Tracy 2, Cal High 0 Pitcher Martinez struck out 14 California High batters and gave up two hits in the first game Wednesday. Pombo also contributed one of Tracy’s 10 hits.
