Two recent local graduates, Jenni Holtz and Michelle Hurlock, stand out among their university athletics peers.
Holtz gains conference honors
Jenni Holtz, a member of the Tracy High School girls varsity softball team through the 2007 season, was named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Holtz is now a freshman pitcher for the Mercer University Bears in Macon, Ga. She earned the pitcher of the week distinction after she pitched an eight-inning no-hitter in the championship game of the Mercer Easter Classic, as the Bears defeated the Ivy League champions from Harvard, 2-0.
It was her second shutout of the season and the second week in a row the Bears gained the Atlantic Sun Conference player of the week honors. Holtz is also the team’s leader in strikeouts and earned-run average this year.
U.C. Davis freshman Michelle Hurlock, a 2007 graduate of West High School, scored 9.850 in the balance beam event Sunday for a three-way tie for first place.
Hurlock tied women from Sacramento State and Stanford University in the event, and her score contributed to the second-highest team total ever for her school in competition. The 194.275 team score put U.C. Davis in third place in the four-way team meet in Davis, with Stanford in first and Sacramento State in second. San Jose State finished fourth.
