An All-Star cheer meet that draws teams from around the world will include a pair of Tracy competitors.

Cheer goes international
Katie Early (top) and Jill Cuestas (bottom right) were selected for a cheerleading team that will compete in an international competition next month in Florida. At right, the two practice as coach Andrea Cuestas (bottom left) spots.
Two local girls have been selected for a cheerleading team that is headed for international competition April 26 and 27 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Katie Early, 11, and Jill Cuestas, 17, both members of Athletic Perfection’s cheerleading program, are part of a 35-member CheerGym.com All-American coed team that includes members from the Motions and Pyramids cheerleading gyms in San Jose and Concord.

The team qualified for the United States All-Star Federation Worlds during a December competition in Las Vegas. It will be the first time the local cheerleading gym has made it to the competition, which is considered the top contest in competitive cheerleading.

Jill said this is the competition she has aimed for since she started all-star cheerleading 11 years ago. Teams are judged based on execution and difficulty of jumps, tumbling, stunts and dance.

Andrea Cuestas, Jill’s older sister and coach, said the team had to win a national competition to qualify for the event, and the win in Vegas filled the bill. The team also has a national championship event slated for next week in Los Angeles.

When the girls go to Florida, they will be up against teams, many from overseas, that have won their regional and national events.

“It’s as prestigious as it gets,” Cuestas said, adding that most teams are from the U.S., but some also come from Europe, Latin America, Asia and other parts of the world.

“The goal of the competition is to make it a more unified sport and make it more competitive in other countries.”
