Bowling on the high side Print E-mail

A few local bowlers have struck the lanes solidly in recent weeks.

Tuesdays have been the day for high scores at West Valley Bowl lately. One local bowler rolled a perfect score and another came within one pin of a perfect game.

Bennett Waite, who bowls with the Tuesday evening Strikers men’s league, said the 300 he bowled on March 11 was his first, but he knew he had the potential to do it.

"I’ve come close," he said. "I’ve shot a bunch of 279s, and for the city tournament, I shot a 288 back in May."

Waite added that the Strikers league, which includes about two-dozen teams and is about midway through a 37-week season, is one of the more competitive leagues at West Valley Bowl.

"There are several bowlers who have numerous 300s," he said.

The week before, Tony LoBianco shot the high score for the Prime Timers senior league, which meets Tuesday mornings.

He shot a 290 that included 11 strikes in a row. He started that game by knocking over nine pins in his first frame but rolled up the spare. He then proceeded to hit one strike after another. When he got to the last frame, that’s when he realized he had just bowled a remarkable game.

Now that he’s shot that high score, his teammates on the Pin-Ups have put him under pressure —in a good-natured sort of way — to repeat and improve on that score.

"When you bowl once a week, you never know," LoBianco said. "I just had everything together that game."
