Tracy High's Nicole Parks-Powell will step into a scholarship and starting role on her chosen college's soccer team.
Parks-Powell said the opportunity offers everything she sought in a college, including a starting position on a team and the chance to study mass communications, speech and drama, which is a new major at the campus. She found the school through the National Scouting Report, which matches athletes and colleges with the athletic programs they seek. "I really liked Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and the coaches seemed interested in me," Parks-Powell said. "It’s a really big step for me." She moved to Tracy from Dublin three years ago as a sophomore and also plays with a competitive league in Livermore. "She’s a real dedicated player," varsity coach Joe Perry said. "She’s played here for me for the past two years and has great size and speed." He added that Parks-Powell, who stands 6-foot-1, is effective in the halfback position, where her job is to get the ball back from the defensive positions and to the forwards. Parks-Powell also was a starter on the girls basketball team and was named All-Defensive center for the San Joaquin Athletic Association in the 2007-08 season. But she says soccer is her first sport. "I feel like I built with the team last year and this year," she said.
