Tuesday’s match at Tracy Golf & Country Club was the annual crosstown tilt between the Tracy and West high golf teams.

Tracy won, 203-240, with Shane Conner shooting a one-over-par 37 and Jake Pineo carding a three-over 39.

It turned out to be a frustrating day for West’s golfers, who usually shoot in the high 30s or low 40s. Tuesday’s low score for West was Brett Steele’s 43. Steele said he missed many of his putts but otherwise hit solid shots.

"That’s OK, but I expect to do better, especially against our crosstown rivals," he said.

West coach Matt Loggins said the crosstown rivalry is actually pretty friendly. The teams both call the country club their home course and often practice together. Loggins added that golf is different from sports where an opponent can directly affect a player’s game.

"It’s golf," Loggins said. "You’re playing the course. All we can focus on is how well we play."

Even with the low scores for the day, Tracy’s golfers said they expect to do better once league matches start. Conner said he wanted to make an impression on the West golfers.

"It’s my last year playing against them, so I wanted to do good," he said.

Pineo said the rivalry was probably more intense last year, when golfers on the opposing teams all knew each other from other tournaments in the area.

Even though Pineo shot one of the match’s lowest scores, his 39 included three bogeys that he would rather forget.

"I actually hit a lot of good shots, but my basic shots I couldn’t capitalize on," he said, adding that he’s making changes to his swing and expects to take a few strokes off his game going into the season.

"When I came out before the season, it was a par-or-better round," he said.

Elk Grove 222, Millennium 260

Millennium High’s golf team hosted Tuesday’s match at Old River Golf Course.

Elk Grove’s Chris Steele shot the low round for the day, a four-over-par 40. Millennium’s low scorers were Cameron Davis and Ryan Plusch, with a 45 and a 48, respectively.

Coach Bill Morgan said Davis and Plusch are the team’s most experienced players, but he expects the others, many of whom have only recently taken up the game, to improve with every round.

"By the time we get to our second tournament on April 1, we’ll be playing good," Morgan said.

Other Millennium scores included Todd Royal’s 55, Tim Langston’s 55, and Britany Oswald’s 57.
