West High’s cheerleading squad is heading south to a competition this month and has added four boys to the team so the group can enter the coed division in the JamFest Nationals at the Los Angeles Convention Center on March 29 and 30.

"It’s the first time that we’re going to do it," coach Michael Campos said.

The group usually enters some type of contest each year, he said, but this year participants decided to create the coed team so they could go up against more teams in a bigger venue.

"We’re hoping to have a little more competition at this one," he said.

The 23-member team includes the squad that cheered at West’s basketball games. The addition of the boys in January makes it the school’s first coed competition cheer squad.

"We’re just excited to be the first in Tracy to do anything like that," Campos said.
