Manteca High claims a 9-5 victory today against visiting West High.

Manteca High’s softball team took advantage of West’s early-inning errors to claim a 9-5 win against the Wolf Pack girls today in Manteca.

“After the second inning, we shut them out,” coach Steve Anastasio said. “We’ve just got to get rid of the early-game jitters and we’ll be fine.”

Wolf Pack batters out-hit the Buffaloes, with eight base hits for West and six for Manteca. Anastasio said his defense made four of its five errors in the second inning, which is when the Buffaloes rallied for five runs.

After that, the Wolf Pack’s batters connected to score three in the third inning and another in the fourth. Elida Rubio tallied a home run, and Arianna Welch and Jamie Costa each hit doubles to drive in runs for West.

The loss puts the Pack at 6-2 for the season.

Madison Hargraves pitched all seven innings for the Wolf Pack, and Manteca batters rarely got the ball past the West infield.

“It was a good game to bounce back from a hard defeat,” coach Martin Miller said, referring to Wednesday’s 5-6 loss to Tracy.

West also had a big day at the plate today with 12 hits. Leading hitters were Kelsea Taylor, who went 3-for-4, Brianna May, 2-for-2, Analisa Green, 2-for-3, and Hargraves, 2-for-4.

West’s sophomores are now 4-2 for the season.
