West falls 4-3 to Davis

The West High varsity baseball team lost a close game on the road at Grace Davis High in Modesto today.

Davis took back the game in the sixth inning to make the final score 4-3.

West coach Jim Rice said starting pitcher Ryan Devencenzi held Davis to one hit and one run for the first five innings. West’s offense was limited to four hits all day but the Wolf Pack put up three runs in the third inning. Josh Thomassen, Riley Goulding, Devencenzi and Derek Oetken, all got base hits today.

Davis turned the game around in the sixth, starting with a hit and walk to put runners on base and a sacrifice fly to move them forward. One scored on a fly-out to right field after he escaped a rundown between third and home, and Davis batters sent home two more to take the lead.

Matt Fontaine came in to pitch for the last out, and West was unable to score in the top of the seventh.

The loss puts West at 3-4 for the season, with the next game Friday on the road against Fairfield as the teams play a game that was originally scheduled in February but was rained out.
