West hangs on for crosstown win

The West High girls softball team won 9-7 against crosstown rival Tracy High today at West High.

West took the lead early but Tracy kept threatening to take it back, especially in the seventh inning when Tracy catcher Nikki Moreno hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence, followed by Brittany Williams’ triple into right field.

West pitcher Brittaney Enterline ended the inning with two strikeouts before the tying run could get on base.

“When that home run happened, I had to back my team up the way they back me up all year,” Enterline said, adding that everyone had to work together to keep Tracy’s batters in check.

“It’s probably one of the best games we’ll have all year.”

Each team collected nine hits, but West got those hits with runners on base. In the sixth inning West extended its lead on a two-RBI single by Jamie Costa, and again on a single by Cherie DeJesus to put the Wolf Pack out of reach.

“It was a good battle,” Tracy coach Greg Smith said. “It’s always a good rivalry. We never felt like we were out of it.”

West coach Steve Anastasio acknowledged that errors on both sides led to the high score, and figured the teams might have been nervous about the crosstown rivalry.

“I know Tracy can flat-out play when they want,” he said.

The Wolf Pack’s leadoff Elida Rubio started the game when she connected for a single into center field and rounded the bases on a Tracy infield error and a wild pitch. She scored when Cherie DeJesus drilled a hard grounder to third base.

West scored twice more in the first on bases-loaded walks, and again in the second when Arianna Welch got on base with a single up the middle, and came home on Caitlyn Girard’s drive down the right-field line.

West held onto its lead as Tracy threatened to come back in the third. The Bulldogs were stopped when West shortstop Welch turned a ground ball into a double play. Tracy scored two more in the fifth as both Brittany Williams and Katie Stutz hit doubles.

West is now 6-1 for the season and Tracy is 2-3.

The Tracy sophomore girls had a comfortable lead after the third inning when Nataly Motyka drove in a run and Stephanie Fisher drove in two more on a double to left field.  Fisher knocked in two more in the fifth.

But Tracy had a reason to get nervous in the seventh inning. That’s when West rallied all the way to a tying run on second and the potential winning run at bat.

“We played a solid defensive game and then one error led to another,” Tracy coach Geriann McGee said.

With two outs, West started to get on base. Analisa Green hit a two-run single, Mattie Hargraves hit a two-run double and Brianna May hit another double to drive in a run. A pop-fly to Tracy shortstop Motyka ended the game.
