West High's softball team wrapped up the Ceres Tournament, 3-1, for a 5-1 season record, while Tracy High dropped a game to Turlock in extra innings.

The West High girls softball team won two more games Saturday to finish the Ceres Tournament in second place with a 3-1 tourney showing and bring the Wolf Pack to 5-1 for the season. Sierra High of Manteca took first in the tournament.

Varsity coach Steve Anastasio said the preseason match was a good test of what he expects his team will face when league play begins.

“Our next three games will really help tell us where we are,” he said.

The Wolf Pack will face Tracy High today, Manteca on Thursday and Merced on Monday.

West 12, Summerville 0

Pitcher Jacey Brown pitched the entire game and struck out 10 batters in the Pack’s first game Saturday.

While Brown limited Summerville to one hit, the West batters rallied in the second inning to score seven. Big hitters included Jamie Costa and Lauren Kuks, who drove in two runs each, and Stephanie Dyer, who also knocked in a run for the Wolf Pack.

West 6, Pitman 2

Brittaney Enterline pitched all seven innings and struck out eight Pitman batters in the second game Saturday.

West’s batters put the team on the scoreboard early and then again in the fourth inning. Brie Cardoza contributed two hits in three at-bats, including a double, and drove in two runs. Arellano Welch went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Tracy girls lose in extra innings

The Tracy High softball team went into extra innings Tuesday against Turlock at the Tracy Sports Complex, but the Bulldogs had only two runs in the bottom of the ninth to answer Turlock’s three runs in the first half of the inning.

That gave Turlock the 7-6 win. The loss puts Tracy at 2-2 for the season.

“We had runners in scoring position, and a base hit would have won it,” coach Greg Smith said, “but we weren’t able to get that hit.”

Part of the reason was easily pinpointed: The Turlock pitcher intentionally walked Tracy catcher Nikki Moreno, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, loading the bases.

“They definitely respected Nikki,” Smith said.

Moreno’s other hit for the day was a double, and Samantha Balanon also hit a double in the ninth to put the Bulldogs on base. Other big hitters included Katie Stutz, who hit a triple, and Sara Amorello, who went 2-for-3.

Tracy pitcher Morgan Hayes completed the game and struck out six.

(S) Tracy 17, Turlock 4

Every Tracy player took the field Tuesday, and nearly every one had a hit. The highlight was the 10-run second inning, when a combination of walks and hits moved Tracy baserunners in for the score. Three home runs, hit by Stephanie Fisher, Rebecca Titus and Tee Gilbert, also contributed.Other big hitters were Brianna Frymeyer, Piper Johnson and Taylor Slabaugh, who all hit doubles.
