As the city of Tracy Youth Hoops basketball league winds down, games played Saturday saw a big upset in the seventh- and eighth-grade division, while top-two teams in the younger divisions solidified their positions atop the standings.
Third and fourth grade
Blue Hawks 16, Warriors 5: After a
close call last week, the Blue Hawks got their game in order and scored a big
win against the Warriors to remain undefeated in the division. The Blue Hawks were
led by Mason Sheen’s six points, while both Michael Voter and Collin Waddoups
added three. Luis Ayala led the Warriors with three points.
Bulldogs 19, Bulls 6: This win
against the Bulls kept the Bulldogs within one game of the division lead and a
shot at the division championship. The Bulldogs’ top scorer was Marc Amaya with
seven points; Nick Goulart added six. Muhammed Olowo scored four for the Bulls.
Lakers 23, Sharks 5: The Lakers
maintained third place in the division standings with a sound win over the
fifth-place Sharks. Joe Parker led the Lakers’ offense, scoring 12 points,
while Trevor Baker and Sam Bardwell each added four. Mary Fabris led the Sharks
with four points.
Hurricanes 14, Jr. Jammers 12: In
the closest game of the weekend in the division, the Hurricanes held on to down
the Junior Jammers. The Hurricanes used a balanced scoring attack to take the
win, as Bo Quiambao tossed in four points and Mark Stamatelaky and Sebastian
Linden each scored three points. Maleik Fisher led the Jammers on offense with
six points.
Lakers 16, Celtics 8: The Lakers
had a doubleheader Saturday and finished 2-0 on the day after downing the
Celtics. Joe Parker scored nine points for the winners, and Sam Bardwell helped
out with six points. Achyuth Varma scored three for the Celtics, while both
Daniel Gill and Aranav Nampoothiri scored two.
Mini Devils 13, Turtles 9: The
Mini Devils moved to .500 in the league with the win against the Turtles. Isaiah
Hunter led the Devils with six points while Thomas Zeratsion led the Turtles
with five.
Kings 31, Mustangs 9: The Kings
once again demonstrated why they are undefeated in the fifth- and sixth-grade
division with a solid offensive and defensive game to down the Mustangs. Sabrina
Baisch led the Kings with 12 points, while Hassan Sabliny added eight and Jacob
Barba pitched in six. Ali Habal scored five points for the Mustangs and Brent
Baculi put in four points.
Heat 26, PB&J 8: The Heat
remained one game behind the division-leading Kings with a sound win over
PB&J. Mark Dionisio led the balanced scoring of the Heat with eight points,
Peter Vankatwyk scored six and Isabella Lawrence netted four. Eric Broker scored a
team-high six points for PB&J.
Kings 26, Cyclones 25: For the
second week in a row, the Kings pulled off a major upset, this time downing the
previously undefeated Cyclones. Justin King, who totaled 15 points for the
game, scored a basket with less than a minute to put the Kings in the lead
26-24. On the ensuing possession, Nathan Vankatwyk was fouled while shooting,
but he was only able to make one of his two free throws to close the gap to one
point. However, the Cyclones turned the ball over in the final possession as
the Kings held on for the win. Dilrag Randhawa added nine points for the
winners, while Nathan scored a game-high 16 points and Juan Gutierrez scored
seven for the Cyclones.
Knights 42, Celtics 13: The
Knights evened their record at 3-3 and finished the weekend in a tie for second
place, with a big win over the Celtics. Kenishi Silva led the Knights with 15
points, Johnny Gori added 12 and Zachary Guertin pitched in nine for the
winners. Justin Vilayphanh scored 11 points for the Celtics.
