After a close call, a local mother submits a plea for careful driving — and walking — during school drop-off and pick-up times. EDITOR, I want to apologize to the young man who walked out in front of my car this morning near Tracy High School. He was dropped off at the exit of the City Hall parking lot and proceeded to immediately walk out from behind an SUV and step into the street to cross. I didn’t have enough time to stop, and I feel his mother, or whoever was dropping him off, felt I was purposely ignoring the young man walking. I have children of my own and try very hard to be a careful driver. I honestly didn’t see him until he was already walking out into the street. His head was down, and he didn’t look before starting to cross, so he didn’t see me either. The driver of the SUV honked, and that stopped him from going out into the street any farther, so luckily, nothing happened. I see so many near-misses around Tracy High in the morning, and this is the first time I’ve been involved in one. I hope this will make both students and drivers, me included, more aware of the necessity to be careful around the intersections and crosswalks near the school in the morning and at release time.
