Goulding's grand slam helps lift the West baseball team over Granada High.

The West High baseball team had a big day at the plate Saturday in a 20-8 win against Granada High in the East Bay Classic tournament at Logan High School in Union City.

That success didn’t carry over through Monday, when West batters out-hit Lodi but couldn’t bring the baserunners around to score. The West varsity team is now 3-3 for the season.

West 20, Granada 8

The highlight of West’s win Saturday against Granada was Riley Goulding’s grand slam home run, which came in the fourth inning with Granada leading 5-4. With Josh Thomassen, Rico Martinez and Clyde Parilla on base, Goulding sent one over the left-centerfield fence.

“It was one of our best offensive games of the year,” assistant coach Gary Moore said. He said the scoring started with a three-run Ryan Devencenzi double in the first inning, continued with Goulding’s grand slam and finished with a 12-run sixth inning.

Both Goulding and Devencenzi had five RBIs, and Anthony Salsedo, Thomassen, Tyler Shepherd and Jonathan Townsend also drove in runs.

Lodi 5, West 3

West’s batters got 10 hits on Monday but only brought three runners around the bases.

“We just never got a big hit all day,” Moore said, adding that West left 12 base runners stranded in the game at Lodi.

Goulding hit a double but never made it around the bases, and the only other big hit was Devencenzi’s double. Devencenzi, Salsedo and Thomassen drove in runs, and Matt Fontaine also got two hits on Monday.

(S) West 13, Lodi 1

West pitcher Chris Collins struck out seven, walked none and held the Lodi Flames to two hits in seven innings while West’s batters took advantage of Lodi’s pitchers for repeated walks in West’s 11-run first inning.

“We had the bases loaded and walked around and had a hit here and there,” West assistant coach Kenny Serrano said.

West’s big hitter was Taylor Kruger, whose three base hits included a double. Collins, Jacob Lopez, Caleb Creasman and D.J. Watson also got hits Monday.

West’s 4-1 record for the season includes two wins Saturday in a double-header against the Manteca High Buffaloes. West won the first game 5-4 and the second game 14-4.

(F) West 4, Lodi 1

West pitcher Jake Peterson gave up four hits and struck out four Lodi batters over seven innings.

The game was tied until the sixth inning when Lodi pitchers gave up repeated bases on balls, including two that walked in runs for West. The Wolf Pack’s hits included a double by Joey Wagner, who also scored two runs Monday. Peterson also got a hit and drove in one of West’s runs.
