Whitney Howard and Terrance Jones earn TCAL first-team honors.

Two West High basketball players were named to the Tri-City Athletic League First Team for 2008.

West coaches said that seniors Whitney Howard and Terrance Jones received the most votes from TCAL coaches, aside from those that went the leagues’ most valuable players.

The league held off releasing the names until all teams were done for the season. St. Mary’s of Stockton, which took first place in both TCAL leagues, sent its girls team to the California Interscholastic Federation Championship, but was eliminated Saturday after Sacred Heart Catholic High School won the squads’ semifinal match, 46-45.

Both Jones and Howard led their leagues in points per game. Howard, a senior guard, also led the league in rebounds per game and total rebounds — her total number of rebounds for the season, 323, is a school record.

“She’s highly respected in the league,” girls coach Joe Lawrence said, “and the other coaches tell their teams, ‘The person you have to stop is Whitney.’”

It’s her second year on the All-League First Team.

West boys coach Steve Thornton said Jones is a good all-around player who turns rebounds into scores.

“He moves to the inside very well,” Thornton said. “He’s a very good offensive rebounder, probably the best offensive rebounder in the league.”

At the season Jones, had the second-highest number of rebounds, right after Ken Fox of McNair High. He tied Fox with 98 offensive rebounds for the season, though Jones played 24 games compared to Fox’s 25.

Other West players on the boys All-League list include second-teamer senior guard Kris Beck, who was fourth in the league in points per game and the TCAL leader in 3-point goals per game; All-Defensive Team honoree junior center Alfonzie Young, fourth in the league for rebounds per game; and guard Darius Turner, who gained an honorable mention.

Junior forward Eliza Bowles was named to the girls’ second team. She was fourth in the league in rebounds and sixth in points per game. Senior guard Angelina Drummer was named to the All Defensive Team, and Drummer, Devin Brown, Kristine Jurgens and April Bernal all gained honorable mentions.

Among the West girls. three will be back next year, including Bowles and Brown, who are both juniors, and Bernal, who is a freshman.

St. Mary’s dominated the All-League selections for both the boys and girls.

Afure Jemerigbe and Chelsey Gray of St. Mary’s were both named league MVPs for the girls, and Nick Peterson of St. Mary’s was the boys MVP.

Great job Angelina Drummer and other girls! She played great defense all of her years and truly deserves more than honorable mention. She passed the ball to the leading scorer and always fought and sometimes led the team in rebounding being shorter than 5'6! She really didnt get all the credit she deserved....also, Eliza did a superb job on the boards and bringing toughness to the squad!
