Two wins to start soccer season Print E-mail

The Tracy High girls soccer team is out of the gate strong, but the toughest competition is still ahead.

The Tracy High varsity girls soccer team started off its San Joaquin Athletic Association league season with two wins against Bear Creek and Chavez, but coach Joe Perry said the real competition in the SJAA will be from Lincoln and Lodi high schools.

Tracy’s first home game will be against Lodi on Wednesday at Plasencia Fields.

"We’re looking forward to Lodi and we’ll see exactly what kind of team we have," Perry said.

Friday’s game at Chavez was a 10-0 rout in which Megan Glasere and Alexis Poppoff each scored three goals. Katelyn Golik scored two and Brittany Branscomb and Andrea Garcia each scored one. Goalie Samantha DeLaTorre had five saves and kept opponents scoreless for two games in a row.

It follows an even more lopsided 12-0 win against Bear Creek on Wednesday in the team’s first SJAA game. Perry said he had to remind his team at the half that Bear Creek hasn’t put a strong team into the SJAA for several years, but after Tracy spent last weekend playing against some of the area’s top teams in the Pitman Tournament in Turlock, finishing with a loss and two ties, the Bulldogs were ready to score some goals.

Golik and Poppoff both scored hat tricks, and Nicole Parks-Powell scored two goals. Other scorers included Glasere, Sarah Ballard, Melissa Worthington and Chantal Genest.

The freshman/sophomore team came off of a first-place win at the Pitman tournament last weekend to record two wins in its first two SJAA matches of the year, putting the team at 6-0-1 overall.

Coach Phil Kalis said the girls played a solid defensive game Friday in a 7-0 win against Chavez. Marissa Matta led the scoring with two goals. Others who scored include Danielle Stepanoff, Merissa Dander, Melissa About, Lauren Brown and Sarah Sabliny.

In Wednesday’s 6-0 win against Bear Creek the leading scorers were Brown and Kelly Vink with two goals each. Stepanoff and Aboud also scored and were credited with assists.
