Marines deserve better thanks than this Print E-mail
Written by Craig Dander / For the Tracy Press /

A Tracy man calls out the Berkeley city council and a protest group for their actions against U.S. Marine Corps recruiters.

In December 2006, U.S. Marine Capt. Richard Lund and staff moved from the old Federal Building in Alameda because it was scheduled to be torn down. He found a new location at Shattuck Square in Berkeley in proximity to the University of California, Berkeley, campus and many other colleges.

Lund is a Marine with more than eight years of service. He flew transport helicopters during most of this time, with two stints in Iraq and a tour in Sumatra, where he delivered humanitarian aid to victims of the 2004 tsunami.

He requested to come to the Bay Area to serve recruiting duty. He is the selection officer for the northern Bay Area; it is his job to recruit, interview, screen and evaluate college students and college graduates who show interest in becoming officers in the U.S. Marine Corps. Once they have formally committed to pursuing the program, his job is to help them apply and prepare for the rigors of Officer Candidate School and the challenges of life as a Marine officer.

To be eligible for the program, you have to either be a full-time college student or a college graduate. High schools students are not eligible to become officers.

Being a Marine officer is not the easiest path in the world; leading Marines requires incredible self sacrifice, and in today’s Marine Corps., succeeding in one’s quest to become a Marine officer almost guarantees a trip to Iraq.

Recently, the Berkeley City Council, in a 6-3 vote, approved a declaration proposed by council members and led by councilwoman Linda Mayo that the U.S. Marine Corps close its Berkeley recruiting center. The document went on to say that the Marines were “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”

That same night, the council went on to approve a parking permit right in front of the Marine Corps offices and a noise permit — both free of normal fees collected by the city— to the antiwar group Code Pink.

These Code Pink folks try to characterize themselves in the media as a “bunch of grandmothers” who just want to see the boys come home from a stupid war. Nothing could be further from the truth.

They painted across the front doors of the Marine office in Berkeley: “Recruiters are traitors!” They’ve thrown animal feces at the Marines entering and exiting the building and posted signs that say things like, “Marines — the few, the proud, the insane!”

Councilwoman Mayo described Lund as a traitor in an interview on National Public Radio. She suggested that the Marines “take advantage of those in society with the fewest options … and they exploit the poor and impoverished to acquire more Marines to fight their war.”

She might be surprised to find that many young men and women seek out the Marines because they are an elite fighting group and the best amphibious assault force on the planet. They join because they want to be a part of something worthwhile and fulfilling. Often, these young people are fulfilling lifelong dreams in the pursuit of the Marine Corps.

We are an independent nation with an all-volunteer fighting force. We must maintain a military or be allied with those who do. Marines fight by order of the president. They have no power to change political policy here or abroad, so to insult them as a group or as individuals in such a hate-filled manner is misdirected at best. It’s not “their war,” and it should be remembered that they serve when and where they are asked to fight.

The Berkeley community has a tradition of respecting free speech and the rights of others. It’s a shame that those traditions have not been on display here. Instead, people with an utter disdain for the Marines, in the name of ending the war, demonized them as was done during the Vietnam era. They treat them as unwanted interlopers, and the council, in its arrogance, evidently thought endorsing this kind of message was for the greater good.

The Berkeley City Council and Code Pink are elitist, segregationist and self-righteous in both word and action.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of these United States of America, and I give my heart to the U.S. Marines and all the armed servicemen and -women who have given me the freedoms my family takes for granted each day. May God bless them all with a lifetime of abundance as they return home from active duty!

Well said Craig Dander. I have a son who is an airmen who volunteered to go to Iraq and do his part. However, as much as my son whould love to be in harm's way, it is the army and the marines that do the bulk of the fighting and dying. My son's air force base is surrounded by an army base protecting them and I am glad of it even if it limits my son's ability to fight. We can never properly pay for the blood these young men and women have spilled on our behalf.

I went to the Troop support rally in Berkekey last Month, and Personaly saw the counter protestors for what they truly are. Scumbags.

No military?
Better get your own arms to protect your home, life, and liberty against invading foes. I thank the Military for keeping war off our country. If China joins with Chavez, our freedom is at stake? I am watching both of them and they are making me nervous... maybe too paranoid today.

Thank You Mr. Dander, My wife and I were there in Berkeley at 5:00 am on Feb. 12th to stand for the Corps against the City council. Code pink, world can't wait, and other anti-American groups were there. Then they emptied the Berkeley High school future criminals to come bombard us with the f-word and other assorted crudities. These "people of peace" and the things they were saying to my wife and I were so out of line. We are Gold Star parents. That didn't stop any of the scum from verbally attacking us. I never thought I would see anything like that crap, even in berkeley. Our son was LCpl Brandon Dewey-USMC,K.I.A. Iraq,1-20-06. He died for the right of these anarchists to live the way they do without the respect of any other human being who has a different opinion from their own. Free speech is for ALL AMERICANS!! Not just for the left wing Berkeley radicals. Thanks for the great letter and we'll see you in Berkeley on the 22nd. Scott and Julie Conover

I'm a big-time lefty, and this piece was both balanced and fair. And well-written, to boot.

Recruiters do lie to kids and promise far more than they will ever deliver, but the Berkeley CC's efforts certainly backfired on them. Whatever statement they were trying to make (I'm guessing it was anti-war) made them a national flashpoint for war supporters and flag-wavers -- and yes, it did stink of Vietnam-era hatred of the uniform, which is in no way fair to the kids -- and they are kids -- who go and do the fighting.
Though I do think City Councils do have a right to say what can and can not be within their city limits; certainly no one can say Marine recruitment efforts would be stymied if the office closed (recruitment ads are all over TV, movies, newspapers/magazines, etc.).

Thank you Mr. Dander. This was a GREAT piece of writing.
I, too, was there for the Feb 12 Rally and YES, the "loonies" were VERY obnoxious to both Blue Star and Gold Star Families. I am so sorry Scott & Julie had to endure. Much of the language was X-Rated.
I do not have a child in the Military, BUT I have "adopted" a bunch of them.
These "kids" are the BEST.
Perhaps it is time for THIS REMINDER
"It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the Freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us Freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the Freedom to demonstrate.
It is the Soldier, who serves beneath the Flag, who salutes the Flag, who's coffin is draped by the Flag, who allows the protestor to burn the Flag.
It is the Soldier, not the politician, who has given his blood, his body, his life, who has given us these FREEDOMS"
(Author unknown)
God Bless the Soldier, especially the Marines.
YES, I will be there on the 22nd!!!
Let's SHOW the MARINES that WE DO CARE & we DO APPRECIATE ALL THEY DO.
Another "Grateful" Patriot

Flaglady Roberta:

I am so glad you typed it, thanks! You are so right on, if it were not for the soldiers we would not be where we are now with the freedom we so much enjoy!

Thank you to all military personnel and their families!

Berkeley has forgotten!

At one time the UC Berkeley was once linked to the DARPA net, which was funded by the US Department of Defense (DoD). DARPA net was a precursor to today's Internet. It was also an experiment in redundant and was considered a valuable new form of communications, especially so in the case of a foreign attack.

Several other cities were linked in a communications grid. Redundant paths of communication would be allowed in the case of one city's communications being disabled. In short - routing technology was developed from this research. Other technologies also flourished out of this technology. The Silicon Valley's economy still benefits from these technologies. Additionally, many Bay Area and Tracy citizens benefit from the overspill of the economic climate created by these technologies.

Thanks to our countries Department of Defense which includes the US Army, The US Air Force and the US Department of Navy which is over the Marines, we have much to be thankful for!!! Perhaps Berkeley has simply forgotten their history?

Craig, great article. Here's an idea. Send all the far left loonies in Beserkely to Vermont, then nuke the whole damn state. Our country would be better off. Free speach is one thing but those fruit loops are a disgrace to our country. And just a reminder, Obama won Vermont.

The actions of the protesters and of the Berkeley City Council are an embarrassment, to say the least. There are other things, too, but some things cannot be printed out of modesty.

I hope that the protesters remember that the price of the freedom that they enjoy was paid for by those who have given their all. What a shameful display.

EXCELLENT article, Craig.

Amy, you are very welcome. (And) Thank you for speading the word. Some people (but not all) have lost sight of keeping our patriot spirits up and runing with elections and all being a distraction. We have to support the troops no matter what. Keep on keepin on!

I couldn't agree more. The City of Tracy should hire LCpl. Motari to take care of the pit bull problem around town.

Well said Mr. Dander. Free speech is important but throwing animal fecies at our soldiers goes way over the line. So does drafting legislation to suspend federal funds to Berkeley due to their opinions. When inducted into the U.S. military, all soldiers must swear allegiance to the Constitution. We must always keep this in mind.

ditto on that OOOHRAHHH. But I never thought I'd EVER make it out of boot camp, man what a wake up call. It got me on the right path in life and away from the teenage wastelands.

And the puppy toss ordeal, I know the Marine Corps will usher that 10r; out of the Corps after a long tour in the red line brig and issue him a Undisireable Discharge. The Marines don't let things slide like that.

I attend Berkeley. Not all of us represent those who were against the Marines. There is a group of us that supports the troops in Iraq and those troops who keep the war from hitting USA. I hope you won't think all students who attend Berkeley would be in the same category as those who betrayed our troops by their negative actions. For that, I am sorry and ashamed of them.

Hey Bobooskius, I'll bet some of those gals in pink are secretly craving some real Marine meat, bright red and USDA Prime. I read this book once about that, and it turns out that when those flower-power girls were handing out free luvin' in San Francisco, and they got a chance to hand it out to some guys in People's Park who turned out to be incognito Marines on shore leave from the Bonhomme Richard, and the girls finally realized that wasting your love juice on hippies was just no way to spend your nights. And of course, the Marines made the gals swear off dope and LSD and so it was a real win-win for everyone. I forgot what the book was called, but you should read it some time. Good stuff. Anyway, next time they set up camp on Nancy Pelosi's lawn, some of these Tracy Vets should head out there and help keep the tents warm at night. I'll bet you would soon see the whole anti-war movement come "grinding" to a halt.
