Quick hits
• Big white blossoms: Have you noticed all the almond blossoms in the past few weeks? Growers report that San Joaquin County’s $143 million almond industry is off to a good start this year — with warm weather and plenty of honeybees.
• Cold splash of water: No one in California will see signs of a housing market “bottom” until the pace of rising foreclosure activity begins to slow. So said Mortgage Bankers Association chief economist Doug Duncan this week. • Red-hot temper: Sen. John McCain repeatedly cut off a reporter Friday when asked whether he had spoken to Sen. John Kerry about being his running mate in 2004. “Everybody knows that I had a private conversation,” he said. “Everybody knows that, that I had a conversation. And you know it, too. No. You know it, too. No. You do know. You do know.”
• 63,000: The number of jobs shed in February, the fastest falloff in five years and the strongest evidence yet that the nation is headed toward — or is already in — a recession.
• 3: Number of hours Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger commutes a day — in a private jet.
• 200: Number of veteran state Assembly staff members given the golden handshake offers this week, as a result of state spending cuts.
• 166,000: number of California children who may be deemed truants as a result of a ruling this week that clamps down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials.
