Tracy varsity splits on road trip

The Tracy boys varsity baseball team recorded a win Saturday in Modesto and a loss Monday in Turlock for a 4-1 season record. The junior varsity team (5-0) won both of their games, and the freshmen notched a win and a tie.

Tracy batters heated up in the sixth inning to take back the game from the Enochs Eagles on the road Saturday in Modesto, their fourth win of the season.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning, but the Eagles responded with three in the second.

Pitcher Kyle Moses relieved Josh Frea in the third inning and recorded six strikeouts in three innings. He and closing pitcher Chris Burgess held the Eagles scoreless for the rest of the game.

In the top of the sixth, Tracy shortstop Stevie Ramos connected for a bases-loaded triple to drive in three, and Kyle Hassna followed shortly after with a bases-loaded single to drive in two. Bobby Agard and Ryan Scornaienchi also drove in two runs each during the game.

Alex Flores struck out 12 Enochs batters in six innings during Saturday’s win at Enochs High in Modesto. He was also one of the Bulldogs’ top hitters, going 2-for-4 and knocking in two of Tracy’s runs.

Big hitters included Kyle Perez, 2-for-3; Ricky Diaz, with a double; Robbie Jackman, with a triple; and Jonathon Combs, with a double and an RBI.

Tracy started off behind after Pitman outscored the Bulldogs, 4-2, in the first inning, but Tyler Daily’s double in the fifth, his second of the day, cleared the bases and put Tracy back in the lead. He went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a two-RBI double in the first. Nick Camper also went 3-for-4, and Oscar Gerstenberger and Tyler Trew added key hits.

Pitman 9, Tracy 4
Tracy recorded its first loss of the season in Turlock on Monday after the Pitman Pride opened up with barrage of hits in the fourth inning and repeated the action in the sixth for the 9-4 win.

The first three innings went well for Tracy, with Stevie Ramos getting on base right away with a double. He scored when Pitman’s catcher tried to throw out Justin Evans but threw the ball past first. Evans scored on catcher Johnny Espana’s sacrifice bunt.

Ramos got on base again in the third, stole second and scored on an Evans double. Evans scored on a base hit by Espana.

Pitman turned the game around in the fourth, when the Pride scored three runs to take the lead.

“Pitman did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Tracy coach Vic Alkire said, adding that three errors on the part of Tracy’s defense were costly. “You can’t make mistakes against a good team.”

Monday’s game at Pitman High was a slugfest, with both sides putting the ball in play and blasting base hits.

“We just buckled down and hit the ball well,” coach Ken Perez said. “It was a wild game.”
Tracy’s Jake Rivera went 3-for-4 and Alex Flores went 3-for-5. Each had three RBIs and a triple. Robbie Jackman (2-for-4) and Jonathan Combs both had an RBI and a double.

(F) Tracy 7, Pitman 7
Tracy was on the verge of winning this one when Pitman took advantage of bases on balls in the seventh inning. Aaron Walker got one hit on one at-bat and drove in the run needed in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. Pitman made the play at the plate as Tracy tried to score the winning run and ended the game with the tie score.

Other big hitters included Andy Levand and San Filippo, both 2-for-3.
