The Bulldogs cheerleaders are bound for Anaheim next month.

The Tracy High School cheerleaders will have another competition in their season next month, when the team will travel to Anaheim for the United Spirit Association National Spirit championships.

The 28 girls on the combination varsity-junior varsity team qualified for the event on Feb. 3, when they took first place at the state championship at the University of California, Davis. The team, which cheered during the Bulldogs’ basketball games, qualified for that round of competition during a regional meet Dec. 8 at West High, where the team took third place.

Team coach Jamie Ulloa said the team competes in the novice division in the largest of four size classifications. Tracy has been represented the past three years, taking one fifth-place and two third-place awards at nationals.

“Our true focus is team support,” Ulloa said. “Competition is a secondary, but fun, thing for us.”

The competition starts March 7, when 18 teams compete before judges at the Anaheim Convention Center. The top four teams will be selected over the next two days and will compete for the championship March 9.
