An animal-rights letter to the editor by Holly Dowling.
EDITOR,
Many Californians aren’t aware that
millions of farm animals live out their lives in small cages and crates. These
cages are so small that
animals experience extreme emotional and physical distress. This practice has
been outlawed in the European Union, but is customary on California's large
factory farms.
This bleak reality has prompted a
number of groups, including the Humane Society of America, to sponsor a ballot
measure that would require that animals be provided the most basic rights:
enough space to extend their limbs, and turn around. A very modest proposal,
but one which would help ease the suffering of approximately 20 million farm
animals in California.
To get this measure on the ballot, a
stalwart group of volunteers are working hard to collect 650,000 signatures by
the end of February. But they need help, even if it means just asking your
friends and family to sign. Consider taking a look at its Web site:
humanecalifornia.org for information about how to lend a hand to this worthy cause.
