Next up for the Wolf Pack: Undefeated Oroville. The West High boys basketball team opened up the Pleasant Valley Tournament in Chico with a 44-42 win over Las Palmas. The Wolf Pack (2-1 preseason) got some scoring from its frontcourt, with 15 from forward Terrance Jones and 12 from Andre Bolton against the Thunderbirds (1-4 preseason), who play in the Butte View League. “It was a pretty sloppy game,” said West coach Steve Thornton, whose team strolled onto the court after a three-hour car ride. “We played like we were still in the vans.” Action continues today in the winner’s bracket for West, who will face undefeated Oroville (3-0 preseason). (S) Elk Grove 55, West 46 A double-double from Eric Green wasn’t enough for the Wolf Pack (1-2 preseason) to earn a win in the first round of the Tokay Tournament on Thursday. Green scored 24 points and hauled down 10 rebounds, and Marcus Smith added seven points for the Wolf Pack. West led 10-6 after a quarter, but Elk Grove put up 22 in the second to lead by four at the break. “It’s a great learning experience,” said West coach Derek Sprecksel, whose team will face Weston Ranch at 3:30 p.m. today. “We’re playing some good teams.” (F) Manteca 38, West 19 (F) West 41, McNair 22 The West freshmen (3-1 preseason) will play in the consolation championship of the Edison Tournament against Linden today after they rebounded from a loss to Manteca on Wednesday.
