Tracy records its first victory against Tokay since last millennium.

The Tracy High wrestling team hadn’t earned a win over former San Joaquin Athletic Association and current Tri-City Athletic League frontrunner Tokay since the previous millennium — which made the Bulldogs’ pin-fueled 56-15 win on Thursday at Swenson Gym all the sweeter.

“This was a big thing for us,” said Tracy coach Darryl Rond, whose squad posted an impressive seven pins and one technical fall en route to the lopsided victory.

It was a marked turnaround from 2006, when the Bulldogs lost their preseason dual match to the Tigers.

“Last year we weren’t in shape — this year, we didn’t take that chance,” Rond said. “They wrestled really well.”

Seniors Blair Bergmann, Jacob Beaman and Travis Silva extended their unbeaten streaks to seven matches, Bergmann with a 7-2 win at 189 pounds; Beaman with a pin at 140 pounds; and Silva with a technical fall at 171 pounds. Beaman is 7-0 with seven pins, and two-time CIF Sac-Joaquin Section meet qualifier Bergmann is 7-0 with five pins. Silva also has five pins on the year.

Freshman 103-pounder Cameron Henle, sophomore 112-pounder Josh Mandeville, 119-pound sophomore Doug Alvarez, 125-pound sophomore Chase Nicholson and junior 215-pounder Marc Chapple all won by pin in the first round — with Mandeville’s win coming after only 29 seconds in the ring. Heavyweight Zach Rodrigues also won in the first round by pin at the 1:49 mark.

Josh Tristan, wrestling in the 130-pound class, won 11-2, and 160-pound sophomore Dylan Smith won by decision, 13-11.

“It was just so neat watching our kids go so hard,” Rond said. “They wrestled their hearts out.”
The win came a night after a loss to a tough Granada squad.

The Bulldogs (1-1 preseason) are off this weekend before wrestling Edison in Stockton on Wednesday and hosting perennial Central California Conference favorite Turlock a week from today.

The Bullpuppies (0-2 preseason) got a pin from junior Xiomara Fonseca, who won her match by pin at the 1:58 mark, and Tyler Huckaby, Dwayne Bracie, Daniel Nunes and Andrew Nunes also won their matches by pin.

Manuel Vega, at 125 pounds, won 12-1.
