He didn’t quite make opposing coaches throw out their playbooks in frustration, but Tracy High defensive linemen Stephen Memory, with a unique blend of speed and power at 6-foot-6, certainly had an impact.

“I think I messed up a lot of teams’ gameplans,” the senior said Tuesday, a day after he was named the San Joaquin Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Year. “A lot of teams couldn’t run (my) way, and couldn’t run certain plays.”

Memory missed two games with a neck injury and wasn’t at 100 percent for the playoffs after suffering a knee injury against Lincoln, but he still had enough left to record 32 tackles and three sacks.

The third-year varsity player was also named to the honorable mention All-League team in 2006 and was named to the South team’s roster for this year’s annual KCRA Holiday Classic, to be played at Grant High in Sacramento on Dec. 22. Memory said he will play.

Both of Memory’s linemates, Stephen Perriera and Chris Turley, were also named to the All-League team. Perriera made the team as both an offensive and defensive lineman.

“I think our (defensive) line was as good as anyone’s around — I really do,” said Tracy coach Mark Stroup, whose team earned 10 All-League honors.

Perriera and first-team selection Gus Garbers helped clear holes for running back Tim Celestine and wide receiver Andrew Diaz, both first-team selections, and provided the protection quarterback Justin Evans needed to be named the SJAA’s Offensive Back of the Year.

For Perriera, the best might still be ahead, Stroup said.

“He improved each and every week,” he said.

In what was the finest offensive season in recent Tracy High memory, Evans, Celestine and Diaz wrote their names into the team’s history books in multiple categories.

Celestine broke for a career-high 1,211 yards and scored 21 touchdowns, good for third in Bulldog history, one ahead of coach Greg Smith and one behind 1982 section champion Raymond Silva. Evans’ 1,435 yards on the season and 2,585 for his career place him sixth and third all-time, respectively, and Diaz’s 693 receiving yards on the season and 1,259 on his career place him fifth and second. His 82 career catches place him second behind Glenn Silva’s 87.

Linebacker Nate Pombo and Zack Hink were also All-League selections. Pombo was the team’s leader on defense, charged with making the defensive calls, and Hink improved drastically from 2006 to 2007, Stroup said.

The nine players named are the most since at least 2004. Seven players — including Pombo, Evans, Diaz and Celestine — were selections in 2006.

Notably, no players from Franklin High were named to the All-League team. The Yellowjackets, whose season ended early after a widely-publicized recruiting scandal, did not participate in the All-League meetings.

Editor’s note: The Tri-City Athletic League All-League team will be announced following TCAL-champion St. Mary’s final game Saturday.

10 Bulldogs made the All-League cut.
