Howard leads Wolf Pack over Spartans.

The West High girls basketball team’s Whitney Howard scored 17 of her team’s 19 first-quarter points, as the senior led all scorers with 26 and led her squad to a 47-29 dismantling of host Grace Davis (1-4 preseason) on Tuesday in Modesto.

The senior shooter also reined in eight boards. The West defense, buoyed by six steals from Angelina Drummer and three from Devin Brown, held the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 31-14 halftime cushion.

Drummer scored six points and Brown added four. They combined for nine assists.
West (2-0 preseason) will go on the road Thursday, traveling down the coast for the Atascadero Tournament.

The Wolf Pack (4-1 preseason) led by six at the half, but the hosts turned it on late, outscoring West by 10 over the last two quarters.

Lauren Fass scored nine points on three 3-pointers, and added five assists. Jackie Jallorina scored seven and hauled in 13 rebounds, and Liu Dellafosse added five.

West shot only 1-for-18 from the free-throw line. They will play Monday in Vallejo.

West’s Analise Green had a double-double, with 19 points to go along with 19 boards, and she blocked two shots. Danielle Grimes scored seven with seven boards for West (4-1 preseason).

The Tracy girls elected to drive to San Jose for their preseason opener against Valley Christian at the Warriors’ posh facility. A one-point deficit to the 2006-2007 CIF Central Coast Section Division IV champions ballooned late, and the Bulldogs (0-1 preseason) had to settle for a 58-47 loss.

“I wanted to see what the girls were made of,” Tracy coach Mike Granillo Jr. said of the matchup. “We did fairly well, we just didn’t execute in the fourth quarter.”

Sophomore guard Stefanie Eubanks scored 11, and Meghan Machado added 12. Marlene MacMillan put in seven, and senior Ashley Freitas scored eight.

The Liberty Tournament is Tracy’s next endeavor. That affair begins Thursday in Brentwood.

A halftime lead vanished Tuesday in San Jose, forcing the sophomore “Ladydogs” to settle with a 3-point loss at the end of their long drive.

Vanessa Gabriel led the way with 15 points. Lindsey Phelps added eight, and Neosha Thompson had four. Sahar Osmani added three for Tracy (1-3 preseason).

It was good half/bad half for the Tracy freshmen (2-2) in San Jose, who unfortunately had to deal with two good halves from the hosts.

Taylor Bobbitt scored nine points, and Bridget Emery added six. Briana Aldridge also scored six, and Adriana Lopez added two.
