The West High frosh team lays claim to the Green and Gold tournament crown. The West High freshman girls basketball team clinched the Green and Gold Tournament title on Saturday with a 44-29 win over Antioch at Tracy High. The finale lacked the drama of Friday’s 35-34 win over Liberty in the semifinals, but West coach Martin Miller’s team will take it. "This was our goal," he said of the tournament championship. "It was the girls’ goal, and they came out ready to play." On Friday, tournament MVP Lesley Baires put in a game-high 11 points, and Analisa Green scored nine and added 14 rebounds. Shavon’te Smothers added eight points and two boards as the Wolf Pack (4-0 preseason) battled back from early foul trouble, played turnover-free basketball in the third quarter and withstood a flurry of five Liberty shots in the final 10 seconds.
In the Saturday championship, Baires scored 14 points and added four steals, three assists and a blocked shot, while Green contributed a double- On Tuesday, the Wolf Pack will visit Grace Davis. (F) Tracy 45, Cesar Chavez 19 (F) Tracy 33, Tokay 31 The Bullpuppies (2-1 preseason) responded to a first-round loss on Thursday with two straight wins to claim the consolation title in the Green and Gold tournament at Tracy’s Swenson Gym. Tracy cruised to a 45-19 win over Cesar Chavez on Friday thanks to 12 points from Taylor Bobbitt, nine from Ashley Serpa and eight from Catherine Gibson. Briana Aldridge added six, while both Latresa Wright and Bridget Emery added five. The going was much tougher Saturday in the final against Tokay, as the Bullpuppies had to withstand a late Tiger rally to win, 33-31. Emery scored 10 points, and Bobbitt added eight. Adriana Lopez scored four, and Serpa had three. Bobbitt was named to the all-tournament team. "It was a good way to end the tournament," Tracy coach Keith Britt said. "Tokay is Tokay, so we were fortunate to get a win. It was good." The Bullpuppies will hop on the road Tuesday for a visit to Valley Christian, one of the better programs in San Jose. Tipoff is at 4 p.m. Trackback(0)
