In their opening game of the Green and Gold Freshman girls basketball tournament, the West High freshman girls basketball team cruised to a 46-9 rout of Ripon on Thursday at Tracy High.|

Lesley Baires led all scorers with 17 points. Brianna Estrada added 11 points and seven steals and also had four assists. Danielle Grimes hauled in five rebounds, and Jizelle Fabionar poured in eight points.

The Wolf Pack (2-0 preseason) kept the Indians scoreless in the third quarter and held Ripon to a single free throw in the entire second half.

West led 26-8 at the halftime whistle. Coach Martin Miller credited the defense for their stand in the second half.

The Wolf Pack, who placed third in the tournament last season, advance to today’s semifinal against Liberty. The winner will play the victor of today’s Los Banos-Antioch match in the championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Some first-game jitters felled the “Ladydogs” on Thursday night at Swenson Gym, as Tracy saw a 11-9 halftime lead abandon it late in the game.

Antioch trailed, 16-15, entering the fourth quarter, but managed to sneak out the win.
Taylor Bobbitt scored nine points for the hometown team, and Briana Aldridge added six. Adrianna Lopez added two points, and Latresa Wright hit a free throw.

“They were nervous, but I think we took advantage of our learning opportunities,” said Tracy coach Keith Britt, whose team missed out on a chance to play crosstown rival West in the semifinals. “We’ll see. It’s still early.”

Tracy will play Cesar Chavez at 5 p.m. today. The victor will play the winner of today’s Tokay-Ripon tilt in the consolation championship Saturday.
