A relatively slow start got much faster after halftime, as the West High sophomore girls basketball team turned a 25-17 lead at the break into a 56-26 final result on Thursday at the Den, in the opening round of the Blue and Gold sophomore basketball tournament.

Lauren Fass paved the way with 15 points, and Jackey Jallorina added 13. Charae McConnell chipped in eight points, while Bria Lorico added six.

“In the second half, we came out much better,” said West coach Joe Hernandez, whose team is seeking a return trip to the finals. West won the tournament in 2006 and came in second in 2005.

Foul trouble was the main culprit early, Hernandez said.

The Wolf Pack (2-0 preseason) will try their luck against Modesto at 8 p.m. tonight back at the Den in the semifinals. Lodi and Ripon will play in the other semifinal, with the winners to meet at 2 p.m. Saturday in the championship.

(S) Ripon 23, Tracy 22

No information save the score was available for Tracy’s sophomore tilt against Ripon.

The Bullpups will face Modesto Christian at 3:30 p.m. today at West High. If Tracy wins, they will face the winner of today’s 5 p.m. game between Stagg and Los Banos for the consolation title on Saturday.
