A night after the Foundation Game fundraiser against Tracy, the West High girls basketball team opened up its “official” preseason with a 76-24 win over Modesto Metro Conference squad Downey on Tuesday in Modesto.
A year after posting a 63-15 win at the Den against a Knights team that would go on to finish the 2006-07 season with an 0-27 record, West (1-0) led Downey (1-1) by only eight points after the end of the first quarter. But the Wolf Pack outscored the hosts 32-5 in the second for a 42-7 halftime lead.
“We started slow, but I think our press was taking effect in the second,” West coach Joe Lawrence said.
Senior guard Whitney Howard led the way with 20 points and hauled in nine rebounds. Brittany Brown scored 12 points, and Eliza Bowles added eight points. Freshman April Bernal, juniors Devin Brown and Jayme Leftridge and senior center Kristine Jurgens all scored six. Leftridge finished with 12 rebounds, and Howard reined in nine. Kala Drummer finished with eight boards.
West shot only 4-for-8 from the free throw line. Brittany Brown hit two 3-pointers.
The Wolf Pack have a week off before they revisit Modesto for a tilt at Grace Davis on Tuesday.
