Mountain House Little League to begin play in the spring.

Mountain House might not have its own high school, grocery store or elected government yet, but beginning in the spring, the planned community of about 6,000 residents will have its very own Little League baseball organization.

The nascent Mountain House Little League, chartered by resident Eric Payne, will host an informational meeting for parents and volunteers tonight, with its first round of signups Friday at the Wicklund School.

“We wanted something else to bring the community together,” said Payne, who began contacting regional and national Little League officials in late September. “And so far, the response has been amazing.”

A host of adults have expressed interest in volunteering, and Payne thinks the league will have no problem fielding six to 10 teams. East Bay sporting goods supplier Total Sports has also agreed to provide high-quality uniforms at cost.

To date, any Mountain House resident desiring to play Little League baseball had to do so with Tracy Little League. A Mountain House-based Tracy Little Leaguer can remain with his or her Tracy team if they so choose, but from now on, anyone living west of Byron Road and Interstate 205 in Mountain House or Lammersville will be referred to the Mountain House organization.

Payne said that the league will open play in the spring at the same time as the other local Little Leagues, with players ages 5 to 13 on teams in the T-ball, Farm, Minor and Major age divisions. For now, teenaged Juniors and Seniors will still have to drive to Tracy to find teams. Mountain House will also participate in the summer All-Star competition.

Payne estimated that there are at least 1,450 children living in Mountain House. The town already has more than enough fields for six to 10 teams, with three full-regulation fields with backstops, dugouts and foul poles; four fields with backstops only; and three all-grass fields available for use at Wicklund School, Bethany School and Central Park.

Payne said that Shea Homes has pledged to build new fields or add onto existing fields if needed.
