Affordable health care is my goal. By Sher Grotts

I am a woman who wants to make a difference in the world. It is obvious to even me, a layperson, that the American medical system is not working. Someone has to do something. Why not me?

This all started for me with the frustration that even though my husband and I make a good living and have medical insurance, I still cannot afford the massage therapy and chiropractic care that I know, from experience, would give me a great amount of relief from the pain of fibromyalgia. How much more difficult is it for people less fortunate than me?

I do not expect the changes I propose to come about quickly, or perhaps even in my lifetime. My goal is to begin a dialogue between 25 leaders of each of the following groups: the mainstream medical community, the alternative medicine community and the medical insurance industry.

The purpose of this dialogue would be to cover five points:

n The necessary fundamental shift in the focus of medicine from healing to prevention, wellness and well-being.

n The necessary inclusion of alternative, holistic, Eastern and other proven nonmainstream medical treatments and philosophies in the mainstream.

n To determine the necessary criterion of the nonmainstream medicine to be eligible for inclusion in the mainstream medical system.

n To outline the process and specific timetable for integration of nonmainstream medicine into the mainstream.

n To outline the process and specific timetable for coverage of the nonmainstream medicine by the medical insurance industry once it has been reclassified within the mainstream medical system.

I am not so foolish to think I can accomplish this by myself. My hope is to move and inspire others to take this on and help me to make it happen. I am asking for your help. In the full scope of this arena, this is a small step but, I believe, it will be a step in the right direction.
