During the current Iraq War, the U.S. use of radioactive DU weapons increased from 375 tons used in 1991 to 2200 tons. Geiger counter readings at sites in downtown Baghdad record radiation levels 1,000 and 2,000 times higher than background radiation. The Pentagon has bombed, occupied, tortured, and contaminated Iraq. Millions of Iraqis are affected. Over one million U.S. soldiers have rotated into Iraq. Today, half of the 697,000 U.S. Persian Gulf War troops from the 1991 war have reported serious medical problems and a significant increase in birth defects among their newborn children. Tracy and Livermore might as well be downwind of Bagdad. Arnold thinks the war is too far away so lets bring it closer to home for no good reason. - Lt. Rourke

Lawrence Livermore is responsible for the continuous lobbying to try to create new nuclear weapons, and the subsequent funding to test and produce a new generation of nuclear weapons. UC Berkeley manages the lab. Its a huge waste of taxpayer money. If the death worshipers at Livermore keep up their lobbying and supporting the nuclear arms race, Russia or some other rogue state will take out Livermore someday. I am sure it would be a prized strategic target. Hope that makes all you locals out there more comfortable. You need to follow how Bush is doing his best to piss off Putin with his defense shield on the border of Russia. - Clay

You know, there is an old analogy of how if you put a frog in a pot of water and slowly turn up the heat, the frog cannot detect the temperature change and will stay in the pot until death. Residents around Lawrence Livermore Labs are just frogs sitting in the pot that is slowly heating up. Your governor Arnold is playing with the temperature. But hey, lets not be critical of Livermore lab because it is such a big part of the local economy, right? Go spend your precious money in a wasteland then. Californians are pathetic little rats trying to keep up in the race. Go drive 580 and sit in each others exhaust. What do any of your care or know about living in a clean environment? - Clay

I moved to Tracy in the early '80s, then had to move a way for a while. I came back last month to find this!? :-\ I didn't know they were doing things like this to the area's people.. I am sorry I moved back. Now that I have I need to find a way to help fight this though. - destiver

Whoooosh... that is the sound of the equity in our homes going down the toilet when nobody will buy in radioactive Tracy anymore. - KimB

There is no such thing as a "safe" level of radioactivity. Depleted uranium has a half-life of 4.5 BILLION YEARS. Essentially, that means FOREVER.

The United States government lied about WMD in Iraq. It has lied about MANY, MANY other issues. This is one more lie. And, if you do not stop these explosions, your children will be sickened, and your grandchildren will be born with birth defects just like the children of Iraq and Afghanistan. Do you know what they ask, now, when a woman gives birth to a child in those countries? They don't ask, "IS it a boy or a girl?"

They ask, "Is it normal?"

The locals will not let this permit stand and will fight it. Lawrence Livermore will not be exploding anything there. This goes to show you that Arnold is not green, but really the "terminator" you elected. You should be ashamed that you slant this article like it will benefit the community somehow. I want to hear the reason for exploding the ordinance in the first place. Where is that in your article? We don't even need a reason anymore, huh? Everyone that works on this research should be fired at Livermore. They are useless scientists. - Clay
