amy, you never ran over an animal? Ya its awful. Be prepared, almost everyone does sometime in their life. It is harder then losing a human. They are in pain and you can't find out where. I hate the people that run over our pets and just leave them there. They are the worst offenders. It was decent that you found the owner Dave. I ran over a cat in the middle of nowhere and never found the owners. Probably a ferril cat. But still, can never get it out of my head. - maybenotdumBcommenT

It sure looks to me like a direction for the priviledge few to own pets in the future. Pets will be sold at high price that only the elite will afford it.

Hope it does not get that extreme?

Fortunately I had the presence of mind to be traveling the legal speed limit, paying attention to my driving and was able to stop as they romped from behind a parked car in front of my vehicle.

The lady down the street admitted they were her dogs and appoligized. I told her that I was just thankful that I didn't have to appologize to her three young girls why it was that I killed their dogs in front of their eyes.

I hope it made an impression on the young mother.

I ran down a dog that cut out from under a car one day and it is an experience I have never forgotten. I had to explain to the young boy standing on the sidewalk that it was impossible for me to stop my car in time and that I was very sorry I had killed his pet.

I don't know if he understood or not as he was bawling his eyes out over his lost friend. I never forgot that and I hope that none of you have to go through that experience. But then again, I am an old softie when it comes to things like that. :'(

And it is my opinion blaming Animal Control for not teaching owners how to care properly for their animals isn't fair either. They are just people doing a job that is sometime very heart wrenching.

If you don't believe me then ask them to witness all the euthinizations they have to perform on a routine basis.

One instant there is a happy vibrant young dog that just wants love and attention and the next instant is a cooling piece of meat that had to be destroyed because no one wanted to take care of the animal.

I blame pet owners because the pets can't do it themselves. I blame drunk drivers because they drive drunk and kill people.

I don't blame traffic officers for trying to track down drunk drivers and people who speed and I don't blame animal control for having to round up and destroy animals because they are not being taken care of and have to be destroyed.

Just the other day, on a street just north of Holly and Lowell, I came very close to splattering two young dogs who were merrily romping around.

Shelters are crowded because all too often Animal control does little or nothing to help people learn to manage their dogs/cats or to retain them (as the current economic crisis is showing -- people may leave their pet at a shelter because they have no home themselves). Blaiming all pet owners or all pet breeders because some are irresponsible is no more intelligent than blaiming all car drivers becasue some drive drunk or banning people from selling cars because some make a profit selling cars. This bill destroys an essential right of ownership and puts at risk a relationship between dog and man that has lasted 15,000 years. - Peggy1

The author's accounting of AB1634 is accurate. It would make owning an intact dog or cat in California illegal. It is a supremely niave approach to problem solving. To prevent the death of any animal, prevent the birth of all animals. Please contact your Senator, voice your opposition to AB1634 and politely request that they vote NO on AB1634 when it comes to the Senate floor. You can find out who your Senator is from the Save Our Dogs website:
    http://www.saveourdogs.net/
This website allows you to compose an opposition letter and email or fax it for free to your Senator:

The California Department of Finance's indepentant bill analysis of AB1634 determined that there would be an estimated increased budget cost to the CA taxpayers of $50k - $30M due to animals that would be euthanized as a direct result of the passage of AB1634. No amendments to this bill will alleviate this additional cost.

Ed Boks, representing one of the bill's sponsors, admitted in his Senate Local Government Committe testimony that Los Angeles wanted this bill to pass because they are in need state *resources*.

If a dog gets out of line don't blame the dog, blame the owner. I use to breed dogs commercially years ago before I moved to California and ran a clean and healthy shop. Our customers were asmatic children, commercial show dogs for the performing acts you watch on television and in circuses and guard dogs for the United States Air Force to be used for security.

None of our animals ever hurt anyone, other than the security animals which were highly trained to do their jobs just like our police dogs today.

With dogs, their problems usually stem from owners who should not be allowed to have them in the first place. Place the emphasis of the problem where it belongs and leave the four legged animals out of the picture.

Responsible dog owners are not the problem.

While I am a proponent of sterilization for pet dogs and cats I have to agree that this law is misplaced. While I agree that shelters are overcrowded I do not believe that every single dog and cat should be sterilized. As Ms. Bingham states, who will be breeding search and rescue dogs? Who will be breeding guide dogs for the blind or assistance dogs for the disabled? This is clearly PETA backed legislation and their stated purpose is to rid us of any pets, period! Education is the answer, and so is NOT buying puppies from people who have them for sale in front of WalMart. Those are not ethical breeders who try to improve a breed, do health testing, screen buyers, and will agree to take the dog back at any time during its life. Those are typical backyard breeders. - sb2482

While I understand the writers complaint, I also take into concideration the fact that majority of so called "responsible breeders" are just back yard breeders doing it for the money. There is more irresponsible people out there then there are responsible when it comes to owning a pet. This bill would cut down on all the unwanted animals that show up in shelters all across our country and euthanized because people are irresponsible. All too many times the animals pay the price, not the people. Lets finally take some responsibility and pass this bill until people educate themselves on the benefits of spaying and neutering. Pets should only serve the purpose of bringing us joy to our lives, not making us money. If your neighbor is complaining about you, chances are something is not quite right with the situation. I will put my faith in the people investigating to use their judgement and expirence to make the call if a situation calls for the animals to be sterilized. I question the people who do not want this bill passed and their motives behind it. Most people would want to see the euthanasia rate go down and all the unwanted animals that come to the shelter. - Whatthe?!
