And yes, I am a bay area commuter w/elementary & middle school-aged children. They will be greated by their grandmother after-school and will participate in after-school sports. I was surfing for a consensus of commute time from Tracy to SF and Tracy to Menlo Park and happened upon this article and frightful commentary. Is Tracy really just a suburban gang infested town, equivalent to Oakland, Compton, etc.? Or does it just sound worse than what it really is? Irritated, the drug houses aren't only hurting themselves. They hurt the homeowners of which 10's of thousands of dollars in damages occur and they sell the dope to kids. When the kids move here to get away from gangs they just gravitate towards them here anyway. Not all parents are to blame. Just the ones that are gang members themselves like the one mentioned in this article. Mario Perrales's brother went to the the gang that beat up his brother and thats how the fight started. He should have stayed away. This is another case of a long time gang family and Mario didn't want to be a part of it so he was a target to anger his family. Yes, we do have a immigration problem. However, people seem to focus on the "superficial" blame by blaming the "immigrant" and not the "employers". When we talk about immigration it is important to note that "illegal immigration" is destroying our wages as workers because "employers" can hire "illegal immigrant" "substandard wages" in "substandard working conditions". However, we as a community are still not discussing "why" has there been an increase in "illegal immigration." Isn't this what the "gang" problem is about. Dividing people using "race" and destroying people with "violence". To the first comment on Mr.Hermanhesse, do you not see the correlation between the "gang" problem's race and violence problem with your understanding of using your view of "us" against "them" and using violence to solve the problem. Furthermore, the reason why parent's try to move their children away for better jobs and the lack of activities and jobs are more of a socio-economic problem that the Bay Area and the Central Valley is experiencing. There is a direct correlation between the economic downturn and rise of living costs with the increase of "gang" problems among youths. If we want to see a decrease in the "gang" problems among youths we should have an honest discussion about the following as a community: 1) Why is there a lack of jobs that offer substantial wages that would help Central Valley residents cover their living costs so they do not have to commute to the Bay Area. 2) Why are we building more homes then places of employment that offer "living wages" for adults and teens. As long as the builders keep building more homes and not addressing the issue of bringing jobs to sustain the population we are probably going to see an increase in the crime rate and "gang" problem. 3) Why are we not having candid discussion about how the rise of our living costs such as food, energy and medical bills are directly or indirectly impacting our quality of our family lives. Such as the amount of quality time we can spend wth our children rather than working or commuting. Regarding immigration, that's another problem apart from gangs. Just like anything else, there needs to be measures and restrictions so that we don't get over populated in the next 10 years. I'm sure many countries deal with these problems just like we do. I hope the government does something about it so that things don't get out of hand. Plus this country has always allowed quotas, and legal migration, visas etc., the correct way to come in, which means we don't completely close our doors. I remember not too long ago I was in H.S, we all new who were the gang members, was no secret to the staff. This problem can be taken care of from the root. I myself am Latino, but I never had any incentive to join a gang, never! I had strong family values, my parents always wanted us to grow up and be someone. It was so easy for myself and siblings to know our direction in life, we had a road map, but the only person I can give credit to is my parents. So listen up parents, you need to guide your kids, because temptation can be any where, doesn't matter the times. And this is coming from a middle class latino growing up in the East Side School district from San Jose, not the best, and I graduated from a near by university and am a successful business person. A key solution, if the parents don't know how to educate their kids, school staff should educate parents and make them more aware of their kids, because many parents are not really there or involved with their kids.
