If graffiti is art then how comw the artist won't put there real name next to it??
Some of it looks really cool. That doesn't mean I want it on my house or fence.
How would these grafitti artist feel if I was to paint on there holmes, whatever I wanted without permission. Then use a BS name so just my friends would know who did it?

Post edited by: RobT, at: 2007/04/06 16:34

Not to get the debate going again but this is a link to an interesting LA Times article on the topic of graffiti vs street art. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-graffiti18jun18,1,5396142.story?track=rss

Art does not involve defacing or destroying property.

Yes. Graffiti is an artform, but like the old cliche says, there is a time and a place for everything. If it is to be treated as an artform, it should be done on a canvas flat or paper that can be hung in a gallery.

Just because a rail car is a clean surface, "ripe" for a spray can, does not make it acceptible. It's illegal because the tagger is not paying for it, or the repairs to make the surface clean again.

Coming from an artist whose had mural work tagged twice, it's disheartening to say the least. I went into a weak-long funk because of a mural being defaced. This memorial- art was nearly ruined, after so much work had gone into it, and it was done as a labor of love. Even the school janitor was depressed, and the kids were disheartened that someone would deface the artwork that helped them to heal as a community that lost a beloved teacher.

I still think of graffiti as art, but you still need to do it in an appropriate area. I kind of liken it to relieving yourself outside. I pulled up to a gas station one night, and there was a man relieving himself in a corner, 20 feet from the door of the rest room. If you want to make a lasting statement, canvas is a much better surface. If you go to sell your artwork, it's much more portable than a rail car.

i am not even in my adulthood and yet i understand what you mean about the vulgar language. i am sorry if i have ever offended anyone with my language (if any word was unappropriate). i would just like to say that we, real graffiti artists, have no intention of causing any harm to anyone. we basically do it as artists that want to be well-known for our expressive pieces. the other reason why we paint on railcars is because we do not like the fact that our piece can only stay in one city and we want everyone to acknowledge how much hard work, skill, precision, and speed we have to accomplish to get up on a railcar. now that we are more educated and cautious of what we write over, our pieces can probably last a little longer than they have been in the past.

If you want it to last longer, consider getting permission from the owner of the property you're tagging. If you want it to last longer, consider putting it on something that can go in a museum.

Michaelangelo painted on the Cistene Chapel because they wanted him to leave the image of God reaching to touch man's mortal hand. Leonardo Da Vinci painted on a wall, because he was commissioned to do so. These pieces of art have been repaired over time to keep them.

The point is, as a writer, tagger, etc. If you want to have your work seen, do it on a place that has a purpose for your art. Otherwise it's like animals marking their territory.

And regarding the vulgar language, keep it on the street and off of the boards. When you're publishing to a wider audience, vs. the kids on the street, you'll turn more ears off of what you're saying, vs. making a point -- which is your intention.

Post edited by: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , at: 2007/06/29 00:54
