Hi richard, hope things are well in the desert.

I assume by "haters" this individual means any of us who disagree with him, regardless of our argument. I choose not to attach the term "hate" to things, because it is a strong sentiment, & frankly I'm not that passionate about this subject. It's simply an annoyance.

I have had 7yrs of art training, & appreciate the work & creativity behind the effort creating these works. However, I don't understand wanting to display something you claim to be proud of, where it's unwanted, & doomed to be painted over. The individuals arguing the validity of this art form aren't even willing to sign on using their names, they use aliases. Not the actions of a proud person...

Post edited by: Jennifer, at: 2007/02/19 20:44

I thought I would share an example of public art. Mind you this is work commissioned by the city where it is located. Yes this is not graffiti style art but shown as an example. This piece is titled "Laying Tracks" and is 17.5x60 feet. This piece of art faces the UP rail yard from a building in Downtown Lufkin, Texas. A very appropriate location. It was done in 2000 by Lance Hunter who has an MFA from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas and is an Assistant Professor of Art at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma where he teaches painting and drawing classes. His series of murals in Lufkin, Texas received the President's Award for Best Public Improvement Project from the Texas Main Street Association in 2001. He also has painted murals in Lompoc, California, El Paso, Texas and other cities in the U.S. To see more use the link below. http://www.lancehunter.com/hmurals/hmurals.htm

When I see a commissioned artwork, that was put in place with permits, in an accepted venue, it's difficult to equate that with grafitti. These "Graf Artists" may be capable of real art, but don't seem interested

Not that I doubt the individuals responsible for grafitti are capable of such pieces, but I think they get some sort of rush out of being deviants. I don't think they really want the average person on the street to "Get it". If these individuals were interested in our liking or accepting their "Art", they would have been more receptive to our suggestions

I can't say I disagree with you. I just thought it might do people some good to see the possibilities. All of these murals I have seen are awesome displays of the impact of public art. This small clip I posted earlier hardly does the real work justice, mostly because of the sheer size of the actual work.

A Person,

Seriously, you cant expect property owners to understand how beautiful your art is..after all, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. your job is to put it up, their job is to take it down. you cannot possible be offended as to why someone wouldnt want that on their property, be it local owner or government.
