Mandatory Spay & Neuter Legislation 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 1
How does everyone feel about the legislation in California that may force dog and cat owners to spay and neuter their pets that are over four months old?

It's an ill conceived, poorly written piece of legislation that will only reduce overall revenues and increase the number of unlicensed pets and won't do anything to solve the overpopulation problem.

As I read more, the SoCal legislator that sponsored the bill doesn't even have pets and apparently thinks that others shouldn't either.

I completely agree with you that it is a poorly written piece of legislation. I had not heard the bills author had no pets of their own. That really says alot about them. I just had been wondering how people felt about this since I have not seen it discussed anywhere. Since I moved away a year ago I miss out on things like this. I am concerned about it mainly because once such legislation passes in one state it will begin happening in others and might not just stop at dogs and cats. As a rabbit breeder it concerns me, especially given the misconception that rabbits have lots of babies. They would probably be the next pet on such a list. So I can see the headache this sort of legislation could create for individuals who have pedigreed dogs and cats they want to keep intact. To me it just looks like a way to tax people for wanting to have pets. I realize that shelters are full of unwanted pets and feral animals are a huge problem, one that cost me two of my best male rabbits earlier this year. I also realize running animal shelters cost money and that has to come from somewhere. I just don't think this is at all the way to go. I know growing up my family owned dogs and we always kept them intact and never once did they breed with another dog.

In my opinion just a feel good bill thats just for getting votes next election! No real substance. No real use. If this guy has a problem with the stray dogs and cats, let him pay to have them fixed.

Maybe but I somehow doubt annoying every pet owner in the state is going to win him many votes.
