Please read my post on the fireworks story posted 6/22. I am serious about getting a petition drive or whatever is needed to legalize safe-and-sane fireworks in Tracy. Email me at jimf01(at)gmail(dotcom) if you want to help.

Take a look at the dry hills around Tracy. There is a reason fireworks are illegal in Tracy. Even with that there are far too many people with illegal fireworks every year and they seldom observe common sense safety practices while using them.

I grew up in those dry hills. If you walk those dry hills and go SW from Tracy you get to the town of San Jose. In the East foothills near Milpitas where I grew up, we bought our fireworks and shot them off safely, never ignited any grass fires or house fires.
Your point is taken Kathy. Someone can get ahold of an item and use it unsafely and bad things can happen. That doesn't mean it should necessarily be banned. Counterpoint to that is the design of safe-and-sane fireworks is such that they can be used safely, even in dry areas. I am not, and would never advocate legalizing the firecrackers, bottle rcokets, etc.

Hey I feel your pain. I grew up in Tracy. I remember when fireworks were legal. I remember real sparklers, bottle rockets cherry bombs and firecrackers. We had a lot of fun with them when I was a kid and we never got hurt or caused a fire. I hated it when they were made illegal. I also hated it when we moved to the next county for awhile where they were legal and I had to worry about drunken neighbors shooting the darn things off near my house. There was a reason I watered my lawn every 4th of July night and it wasn't because the grass was dry. If people will follow the safety guidelines the safe and sane fireworks can be fairly safe to use. Too often there is some idiot who just won't and that person not only endangers themselves but others.

Fireworks are on sale this weekend in Manteca, Dublin, Stan County, just about every direction you can drive out of Tracy. The fireworks you will see ignited in Tracy next week all over town will be the result of people driving out of Tracy, spending $$$ that could have benefited Tracy non-profits.

Does anyone involved in fundraising for non-profits in Tracy want to get up an effort to legalize safe-and-sane fireworks in Tracy?
