I've been commuting from Tracy into the Bay Area since 1993. It gets worse every year. If you can take the train do it, save money, gas, frustration, time, etc..... I agree with the other poster who wrote 580 is a living hell, it is. When there is an accident you can forget getting where you want to go on time. I've seen the line of cars backed up from 205 in Tracy all the way up and over the Altamont into Livermore. There was a big rig accident a few weeks ago at 6 am. Took me 2 hours to get to Pleasanton. The line of cars into the Bay Area from Tracy stretched well into the late afternoon. Sometimes it is backed up for no apparent reason other than too many cars/trucks on the road. The Altamont Crawl. There are lots of semi trucks on 580 too ferrying cargo to/from the ports. Holiday weekends are a nightmare too. There aren't too many transit options from the Central Valley to the Bay Area other than ACE. Lots of single drivers commuting. You're probably better off living in Livermore or Pleasanton/Dublin (if you can afford it) and making the reverse commute to Modesto. She'll be frustrated with that 580 commute pretty quick. Hope that helps.
