Miked, Welcome to being a teenager in Tracy. What you describe is nothing new. I grew up in Tracy and had to deal with being followed by a certain officer for no good reason. I was one of those kids who never did anything that should have attracted this guy's attention, he was just a letch and every decent girl in town knew it. Why he was allowed to be on the force I will never know. One night he carried it too far, giving me all the proof I needed, so several adults finally stepped in and put a stop to the nonsense.
My own daughter has been stopped and asked for ID numerous times. She was going to college but because she looked young and was walking past the high school on her way home they felt compelled to check her out far more often than should have been necessary.
If you are doing nothing wrong, don't get nervous. Ask for a copy of the officer's card and document on the back the date, time and location you were stopped. Save them. If they really are harrassing you for no good reason you will be able to prove it soon enough. Then you can have an adult do something to end the situation.
Tracy does not have too many police for it's size and most are decent guys just trying to do their job but it only takes one rotten apple to make the whole bunch look bad.

Post edited by: Kathy, at: 2008/01/23 03:09

The only reason to panic when you get pulled over is because your probably doin something your not suppose to, DUH! Your lucky, Mike, because if you were my kid, I would NOT let you drive until you were 18. Im only 21 and I remember being in high school and thinking that teenagers just shouldnt be driving yet, they just dont have the mental capacity to handle a over1ooo LBS metal machine that is lethal.A part of the human brain that controls impulsivity and risk-taking isnt fully developed yet in teenagers, so they take unsafe risks. As far as getting pulled over, when you go to the DMV to get a license, it states specifically that you must agree to submitting your blood, and urine to a peace officer at ANY time. Im not sure that even have to give you a reason. If a cop thinks somehing fishy is goin on, he has every right to pull you over. And honestly, teenagers bring in on themselves. I know about the whole cant-drive-with-friends-until-a-certain-time-comes thing and I KNOW that there are teens out they that break that law, so I have no pity.

If you dress and look like a gang banger then you will be treated like one.

I get pulled over for no reason all the time. So do all my friends, cops never have a good reason for pulling us over. They do let me go every time but why should i have to panic when a cop gets behind me just because i'm a teenager. One thing is this small town has way too many cops, each cop has to meet a quota so they have to give out a certain amount of tickets or they get fired, they can't find enough people breaking speed laws so then they have to start writing tickets for no front license plate? no light on your back license plate? and if you don't pay these your license gets suspended and if you get pulled over after that you got to jail, all for no front license plate! All traffic laws are just a way for the government to get in the pockets of american people.

Milked, Tracy PD and most agencies DON'T have quota's anymore.... There all free to write AS MANY TICKETS as they wish.....
